Whereas black nationalism can be traced to Marcus Garvey (and his predecessors), Black Power was first articulated by Stokely Carmichael in 1966. This accessible survey looks at "the murky depths of a movement that paralleled, and at times overlapped, the heroic civil rights era," beginning in the late 1950s, with the rise of the Black Muslims, and ending in 1975. Joseph, who teaches Africana studies at SUNY–Stony Brook, brings to light less-known characters like the Rev. Albert Cleage Jr. of Detroit, who helped organize the 1963 Walk for Freedom a month before the March on Washington, as well as fresh judgments on figures like Malcolm X, "black America's prosecuting attorney." He analyzes the negative media coverage of Black Power, offers a discerning take on Carmichael and Charles Hamilton's 1967 book, Black Power, and recounts the emergence of the Black Arts movement. The Black Panthers also get consistent attention, in rise and decline. Drawing on a rich set of sources, including interviews and oral histories, the book also illuminates flash points in Newark, N.J.; Oakland, Calif.; and the Sixth Pan-African Congress in Dar es Salaam in 1974. Though it focuses more on politics than culture—e.g., the 1968 Olympics protest gets just a footnote—it's a good introduction to the topic. (Aug.)

Joseph, African studies professor, surveys the full geographic and political panorama of the black power movement. He begins with the Southern movement and the political organizing of SNCC and SCLC, then moves on to portray the crisis in the movement reflected by the rise of Stokely Carmichael and the breach of the traditional white-black alliance. From there, Joseph analyzes the shift to the West Coast, initiated through the rise of the Black Panthers and their leader Huey Newton becoming symbols of the black power movement. Finally, Joseph examines attempts at political organizing in the North, reflected in the black political convention in Gary, Indiana, in 1972 and Amiri Baraka's subsequent activism in Newark, which resulted in the election of a black mayor. While Joseph explores the interplay between SNCC and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as Malcolm X's symbolic engagement, he also highlights figures who were significant though more historically obscure, including Robert Williams, the Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM), and Harold Cruse, rounding out a more complete overview of this era. A gripping story well-told

This book is outstanding! I don't know what I was expecting. I thought, perhaps, that it was going to be an apologia regarding the Panthers. Or, if not that, it would be a polemic detailing how the Panthers "messed everything up". You see, there is a generally accepted narrative regarding the struggle for African-American equality in this country. The narrative goes like this: for a number of complicated reasons, Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation. Eventually, this was followed by Jim Crow segregation and "separate but equal". Various African-Americans engaged in a heroic civil-rights struggle, and they were aided in this struggle by whites (Communist and otherwise) and other sympathetic ethnic groups. The Civil-Rights Era coincided with and/or encompassed an age of general period of civil disobedience which included Vietnam War protests, Labor Union unrest and a continuing feminism movement. A number of solid victories came from the Civil Rights Era, namely, Brown v. Board of Education and the Voting Rights Act. Also, a number of iconic figures, and moments, emerged from this era, namely, Rosa Parks (and the Montgomery Bus Boycott), and Martin Luther King Jr. (and the March on Washington). Then these craaaaaaaazy kids came along, toting guns in San Francisco and following around cops in Oakland. Stokely Carmichael shouted "Black Power!!" at a March Against Fear in Mississippi in 1966. Olympic Medalists Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave Black Power salutes on the medal stand at the 1968 Olympics. In the 60 Minutes special, "The Hate That Hate Produced", Mike Wallace told America that a huge group of angry, angry, angry Muslims were proliferating in New York, and Malcolm X was the head nut. All of a sudden, crazy radicals replaced the politics of integration, non-violent protest and collaboration with that of aggressive "black self-esteem" and incendiary revolutionary rhetoric. As a result, these excesses dragged everything down, precipitating a Civil Rights decline. This, coupled with a conservative backlash, continues negatively to affect the lives of African-Americans today. That's the general narrative.

What Dr. Joseph's book does is blow up this narrative by examining the Black Power Movement as a legitimate movement separate and distinct from the Civil Rights Movement. His book illuminates the import and continuing influence of Black Power, while remaining cognizant of the flaws of its leaders. The book places Black Power within a global context, showing that Black Power was about more than the Black Panthers and the Nation of Islam. (He writes about 1955 Afro-Asian Conference in Bandung and Catros's trip to New York in 1960, when he made a point of meeting with Malcolm X.) Of course, the book DOES scrutinize the Black Panthers and the Nation of Islam as well. Dr. Joseph highlights the stars of this period: Malcolm X, Huey P. Newton and Stokely Carmichael. In fact, this book makes clear that Stokely Carmichael is such a seminal figure that he's worthy of having a separate book devoted entirely to him. But Dr. Joseph also tells the stories of lesser known figures such as William Worthy, Robert Williams, Albert Cleage, Amiri Baraka and Sonia Sanchez. He argues persuasively that Lorraine Hansberry's, "A Raisin In the Sun" is actually a radical play. He identifies the radical roots of King and he eloquently disseminates what Baraka meant in his essay, "Black Is A Country".

When you look in the back of this book, you see that it has a 22-page bibliography. Sources include interviews and oral histories, as well as extensive archival material. It's clear Dr. Joseph has done his homework. Yet, when you read it, the book does not come off as an inaccessible ivory tower product full of incomprehensible jargon. He presents the story of Black Power as a gripping narrative. He shows the reader that, in a nutshell, the Black Power Movement provides lessons for today's generation of activists. When I read this book, I couldn't believe that no one thought to write such a book before now- a book that treats Black Power as seriously as "Bearing The Cross", "Parting The Waters", "Pillar Of Fire" and "At Canaan's Edge" treat the Civil Rights Era. If you want insight into the humanity of iconic Black Power figures and a clearer picture of the struggle that continues today, this book is the place to start.

Humane, full-spectrum storytelling

This book is about more than politics. It's about people, people who are indeed political creatures, but are red-blooded people, with loves, and creativity, and petty rivalries, and regional differences.

Peniel Joseph has really served the public here. I hope this book is picked up by people (like myself) born after this narrative's conclusion. By moving beyond the waters of Malcolm X and Eldridge Cleaver, and looking into the arts, and cultural developments like Kwanzaa, and religion, he was actually able to bring focus to the narrative.

It was very refreshing to see Martin Luther King as more than a teddy-bear on the one hand, and more than a broken record on the other. He was in the first instance a minister--meaning a person of faith who worked with people, in all their humanity. King changed his mind about realities, and grew, and related to people with a flexibility not shared by, say, philosophers.

Joseph leaves us with the stories of men and women, not always heroes, and not too unlike ourselves in their daily lives.

My only regret is the book's ending in 1974. It would have been nice to understand black power's interface with early hip hop, and such.

The premise of Destroying the World to Save It is terrifying: after studying the history of the Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo (instigators of a 1995 nerve gas attack on a Tokyo subway), the author believes them to be only one group in a "loosely connected, still-developing global subculture of apocalyptic violence." We ignore this subculture, says National Book Award winner Robert Jay Lifton, at our future peril. In interviews with former Aum members once led by the guru figure Shoko Asahara, it is their "familiar ordinariness" that most disturbs Lifton. Drawing parallels to his studies of Nazi psychology, he notes that--just as in Germany--practicing doctors and trained scientists were persuaded to join Aum and offer their specialized knowledge in the service of the cult's plans. The story of Aum, says Lifton, has for the first time shown the world that not only other states but more elusive groups less open to diplomacy may be able to gain control of weapons of mass destruction.

While Destroying the World to Save It is a deeply researched and intelligent psychological analysis, Lifton's conclusion is nevertheless unsatisfying. While surmising that those who next attempt to carry out an apocalyptic plan may be more powerful and competent than Aum, he does not really present a good suggestion for how to prevent their success, offering only a psychologist's "plea for awareness." Lifton's book about Japan's Aum Shinrikyo cult is less an exploration of terrorism than a look at the psychological traits of the mostly educated followers of Aum's guru, Asahara. As a psychiatrist, Lifton (Death in Life; The Nazi Doctors; etc.) is well equipped to explain the siren call of apocalyptic gurus and the psychology of disaffected groups seeking to cleanse and reinvent the world. He shows how Aum Shinrikyo appropriated Eastern wisdom, American New Age elements and modern technology in order to spiritualize violence into a form of altruistic murder. In 1995, members of the group released deadly sarin gas in a Tokyo subway, killing 11 people, injuring thousands and terrifying the world. Lifton describes the "psychohistorical" past of Japan (the move from feudalism to modernism, the emperor system, Hiroshima) to show why 23,000 religious groups in Japan have a total membership of 200 million JapaneseAeven though the population of Japan is only 130 million. Though he focuses on Aum, Lifton believes that the conditions that made Aum possible exist throughout the developed world. Today's postmodern, "posthistoric" times have left many in "a kind of nothingness, in a more or less permanent postmortem" and therefore susceptible to the lure of end-of-the-world extremism. The book ends with shorter analyses of American cults such as Heaven's Gate, as well as an exploration of the "fringe apocalypticism of the radical right" (e.g., that of Timothy McVeigh). In his effort to address so many manifestations of apocalyptic intoxication, Lifton's reach slightly exceeds his grasp. On March 20, 1995, members of the Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo released sarin nerve gas into the Tokyo subway system, killing 11 people and injuring 5000. Lifton (The Nazi Doctors) provides a psychological examination of the motives of the group and its founder, Shoiko Asahara. Lengthy interviews with ten former low-level Aum members give fascinating insight into the appeal of Asahara's combination of Buddhism, New Age thinking, and apoplectic visions; daily life within Aum Shinrikyo; and their own attempts to rationalize or reject the group's actions. Lifton also discusses the characteristics of Aum that caused it to move toward violence. Highly insightful work by one of the original scholars of mind control or "thought reform"

Building on his early work, this analysis by Lifton of a doomsday cult is even more insightful and nuanced. A great read for those fascinated by this particular cult (Aum Shinrikyo), as well as for those who want to see how Lifton's criteria for deciding whether a group is a cult play out in a very particular case. He also has great empathy for his interview subjects and how their differing backgrounds and dispositions, as well as their direct experiences with the guru and various stages of "initiation," affected their willingness to stick with him up to and through the sarin attacks, and their eventual disaffection.

Fanatacism is Seductive Poison

Dr. Lifton's work gives us an excellent academic look into cult thinking. However, if you want to see how innocently these groups can start, if you want to understand the mind-frame of a believer, if you want to experience how it is that potent beliefs can skew one's morals then also include in your reading Seductive Poison. Anyone who has ever wondered how the unbelievable comes to pass Layton's memoir of cult life has the answers. Although three years old it remains a timely, intimate and enlightening look into a world that exists along-side our own. If you want a heart pounding visceral glimpse inside another world this book is it. It is not just evil that can do the things we've experienced since September 11. It can also be idealistic, devout folks like you and me. We are all more susceptible to fanatical beliefs since war has touched our soil. Would we now even question giving anthrax to "them"? Layton's work shows how it can go both ways.

Important reading for our unsettling times

Robert J. Lifton has dedicated his life to explaining the phenomenon of blind faith. However, to understand the Taliban world John Walker entered nine months ago one needs to add to the list of required reading, an eloquent memoir by someone not unlike the idealistic young Walker, Deborah Layton. Dr. Lifton and Layton's words together only broaden the scope of our possible comprehension of this difficult subject and make excellent reading for theologians and society at large.

This informative and entertaining chronicle of the American Revolution’s final battles also concludes Ketchum’s fine series of that war’s campaign histories (Decisive Day: The Battle for Bunker Hill, etc.). The narrative begins in the fall of 1780. The Continental army is in low spirits, the nominally allied French having proven unreliable; Benedict Arnold’s treason is uncovered; and shortages of rations, money and morale sweep the ranks. In his casual story-telling voice, Ketchum breathes life into historical characters as they come together in the war’s largely familiar final moments to defeat the British. Relying heavily on anecdotes, the author relates Nathaniel Greene’s brilliant win over a brewing war of attrition in the South, and the French officers’ miraculous reorganization of land and sea forces that enabled the coordinated transport of Washington and Rochambeau’s combined armies to besiege Yorktown. The real pleasure of this book, however, lies in its personal accounts, which reveal unusual details about colonial life. The Comte de Clermont-Crévecoeur, for example, unsparingly assesses the charms of American ladies in each region (Rhode Island women were frail, but had lovely complexions; Virginians were more hospitable, but aged faster). A nearly nude Peggy Arnold embarrassed George Washington into speechlessness by feigning hysterics to cover the tracks of her escaping husband, Benedict, and hide her own complicity. Washington’s aide Tench Tilghman hurriedly rode from Yorktown to spread word of the American’s triumph. A thoroughly satisfactory finale to the author’s American Revolution magnum opus, this is an excellent volume for both new and seasoned students of colonial history.

Victory at Yorktown

After reading this book, in spite of the previous customer reviews, I am extremely disappointed in the seemingly short sighted attitude of those individuals who wrote subject reviews. I would agree that possibly the title for this book is incorrecet as it covers a lot more ground than Yorktown and goes into a significant amount of history leading up to the battle at Yorktown.

I was pleased with the overall subject and the information that Ketchum presented in a very factual and yet interesting manner. I would consider this one of the books that makes a better understanding of everything leading up to the final "full scale" battle between American and French allied forces and those of Great Britain in our fight for independence.

Not as good as ketchum's earlier works

One of the things I have enjoyed about Ketchum's works is how readable they are and Victory at Yorktown is no exception. That being said,I did not enjoy this work as much as I did his previous works. One reason might be that I read Decisive Day, The Winter Soldiers and Saratoga before I knew much about the Revolutionary war, and I have read a lot of other books since then. I didn't really feel as though I learned anything new in Victory at Yorktown. It gives a brief account of the campaign in the Carolinas and Arnold's treason before delving into Yorktown. The description of the battle, and the Naval engagements prior to, seemed to lack any emotion or excitement. The personal accounts he provides are really the same ones that every other book about the revolution gives. This could be a good book for those reading about the later stages of the war for the first time, however those who are well read on the subject may want to skip it.

Entertaining but could be better

I did enjoy reading Victory at Yorktown. I did think the title of the book was a bit misleading. As other reviewers have pointed out, about one half of the the book deals with the southern campaign. What little time is devoted to the actual Yorktown engagement is broken up by frequent wanderings into other areas, some relevant, others not. I was also a bit disappointed by the very skimpy coverage devoted to the diplomatic dealings going on during the Yorktown battle. The book, entertaining as it was, could really have improved had more attention been given to the surrender negotiations.

Even with this criticisms I highly recommend Victory at Yorktown.

In 1981, François Mitterrand became France's first popularly elected socialist president. By the time he completed his mandate, he had led the country for 14 years, longer than any other French head of state in modern times. Mitterrand mirrored France in all its imperfections and tragedies, its cowardice and glory, its weakness and its strength.

During the German occupation, Mitterrand hedged his bets by joining Petain's Vichy government. Later in 1943, under the nom de guerre of Morland (and 30 other aliases), Mitterrand quit Vichy for the Resistance and a paramilitary organization.

He changed the ground rules of French social and political debate in ways more far-reaching and fundamental than any other modern leader before him, helping set the agenda for France and Europe for generations to come. Detail-Oriented and Rather Authoritative

The first Philip Short biography I read was Mao: A Life in a Chinese history class in college about a decade ago. The class did not go so well, but I kept the book and eventually read all of it. I later did the same with Pol Pot: Anatomy of a Nightmare. I was glad to get the chance to read a book by Mr. Short about someone who was not a bloodthirsty mass murderer.

In keeping with his habit of writing tomes that put his name to the lie, Mr. Short has put together a very detailed account of François Mitterrand's life. Starting in media res with some dubious shenanigans in the 1950s, the book goes backwards before going forwards. I found the account of Mitterrand in the Resistance to be one of the most interesting parts of the book overall.

I had just finished Alistair Horne's A Savage War of Peace before reading this book, so I was glad to get to the Algerian War because it meant I had a chance of knowing some of the names and stories involved. Like other biographies, this one suffers a bit from not being able to give full contexts for who was doing what, where, and to whom - whether in Algeria or anywhere else. The immediate and obvious problem is that then any good biography would be 1200 pages long. Seeing as A Taste for Intrigue comes in at a bit under 600, I think that is plenty.

I knew nothing about Mitterrand before reading this book, other than having heard his name a couple of times in the 1990s - I was probably about 10 years old. I get the profound feeling that Mr. Short is doing his best to present a very balanced and fair account of the more controversial aspects of Mitterrand's life. He had a habit of being ambiguous and shifty, and Mr. Short both demonstrates how he did it and then explains why. This covers a number of episodes in Mitterrand's life, including, I think, the bigger and louder scandals that he lived through. I am usually leery of reading biographies because of the possibility of biographies being written either to laud or condemn someone - but Mr. Short and Edvard Radzinsky are two biographers for whom I make exceptions.

I undoubtedly have learned and understood a good amount of information through reading this book, both directly from words on pages and from thinking about what happened and why. No one book can make you an expert on anything, unless the subject is "the literal words in this book, this one, the one you're holding", but I feel that I now have a dim grasp on why France has done the things it's done in my lifetime, and part of why Americans tell jokes about the French. Incidentally, die-hard Reaganites and people who say they love Ronald Reagan will not like how he comes off in this book. That should not really surprise anyone, however.

The only really weak section in the book, I thought, was the portion covering some of the bigger and more noteworthy events in the 1980s. Most of the rest of the book goes into detail about what Mitterrand does and why. I get the impression that the '80s were glossed over, as there are lots of references to news stories and famous incidents with background on the events in question, but not necessarily Mitterrand's motivations for however he responded to them. Maybe the sources are not available yet, maybe they were not written to start with, I cannot say. I suspect that, like the Algerian War section, it is due to the sheer complexity of the events in question - although I think I would have liked a bit more about Mitterrand's thought process during some of these events.

Regardless of the thinner feeling in the '80s section, and some quibbles with a few of the author's conclusions tangential to Mitterrand's life story, I regard this as an informative and very in-depth book.

A good bio

French politics is often difficult for Americans to understand. Philip Short tries manfully to explain the history of French politics through the life of François Mitterrand who began his political career during the Second World War and ended up France's president from 1981 until 1995. He was called the Florentine by contemporaries because he was so slippery and difficult to count on. Hence, the title. Mitterrand served as a French minister in eleven governments between 1946 and 1958. He became the main opponent to
Charles de Gaulle and his allies. Mitterrand ran against de Gaulle in 1965, Giscard in 1974, and finally won in 1981 and was re-elected in 1988. While his politics were inconstant in many ways, he was fervently anti-Communist and the most loyal ally of the United States of any of France's presidents since 1958.
Short's one failure is to understand why French republicans were so opposed to a strong executive given their experience with absolute monarchs and emperors. Short also takes a lot of shots as US policy, some of which are wrong on the facts. The book is a long slog requiring frequent visits to the glossary for those unfamiliar with French politics. However, his bio stands head and shoulders above any other in English.

shows broad connections to many important events

This biography provides some perspective on the life (at least that is publicly accessible) of Francois Mitterand. Mitterand was one of the world's prominent political figures in the latter part of the twentieth century, connected to numerous interests of France, both internally, and in international affairs. Giving a perspective on his life also provides significant insights into events from the time of WWII until the later years of Mitterand's presidency of France in the 1990s. He was very ambitious, and was also very talented and intelligent, playing the intricate political games of the French. He had his successes, and also some rather embarrassing failures, which the biographer attempts to rationalize somewhat. I thought the book was very good, and highly recommend it as particularly insightful. Mitterand compartmentalized his life, so that only certain aspects of his life are readily available, but these were very interesting, and bring us to confront some of the major events of the twentieth century.

1Postlude to The Future

The announcement of W.E.B. Du Bois’s death came just after Odetta finished singing, a mighty trumpet of a voice that had accompanied the nonviolent civil rights movement from early days. Roy Wilkins, executive secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), broke the news in his precise midwestern voice that always reminded you of a proper Protestant pastor or one of the older men behind the counter at Brooks Brothers. From late morning into mid-afternoon, the scalding sun and suffocating clamminess had exacted their toll from more than 250,000 men, women, and young people who crowded the length of the Reflecting Pool of the nation’s capital in extraordinary response to the charge of Asa Philip Randolph, grand old man of civil rights and the moving force behind the March on Washington. Tall, white-maned, and as ebony as an African chief’s walking stick, Randolph had summoned Americans to Washington that twenty-eighth day of August, 1963, in all their professional, social, and ethnic variety to act, as he said in his cathedral baritone, as “the advance guard of a massive moral revolution for jobs and freedom.”1

Before Wilkins’s brief, epochal announcement, speaker after speaker had stepped up to the altar of microphones to music and song by Joan Baez; Peter, Paul, and Mary; Pete Seeger; Marian Anderson; and Mahalia Jackson. As the sun blazed down, the marchers witnessed a who’s who of America’s civil rights, religious, and labor leadership. Eugene Carson Blake of the National Council of Churches, with a speech too dry for this evangelical occasion, was followed by young John Lewis of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), whose speech in its original draft, threatening to lay waste to the white South, had brought down upon his militant head the collective wrath of the civil rights elders and Cardinal Patrick O’Boyle of the Washington archdiocese. Lewis finally agreed to soften his words, but not by much, and the crowd cheered when he intoned, “Listen, Mr. Kennedy, listen, Mr. Congressman, listen, fellow citizens—the black masses are on the march for jobs and freedom, and we must say to the politicians that there won’t be a ‘cooling-off’ period.” The United Automobile Workers’ ebullient Walter Reuther almost matched Lewis’s cautionary rhetoric, telling a nation on guard against Soviet imperialism that it could not “defend freedom in Berlin, so long as we deny freedom in Birmingham.” Then came Floyd McKissick of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) to read James Farmer’s powerful speech. Had Farmer not insisted on staying in jail in Plaquemine, Louisiana, his baritone delivery would surely have made eyes water and pulses rise even more than the intense McKissick succeeded in doing. Whitney Young Jr., the handsome, gregarious new head of the National Urban League (NUL), was more at home in the boardrooms of corporate donors than in trying to stir crowds, and his too rapidly read message showed it.2 When Matthew Ahmann of the National Conference for Interracial Justice (NCIJ) used up his ten minutes in moral generalities, the thermometer stood at eighty-two humid degrees and attention spans evaporated.

Now Roy Wilkins was at the microphone, to be followed by Rabbi Joachim Prinz of the American Jewish Congress. But instead of beginning his prepared address straightaway, Wilkins opened by saying that he was the bearer of news of solemn and great significance. Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois was dead. He had died in his sleep around midnight, on the twenty-seventh, in Ghana, the country of his adopted citizenship. “Regardless of the fact that in his later years, Dr. Du Bois chose another path,“ Wilkins told the suddenly still crowd, “it is incontrovertible that at the dawn of the twentieth century his was the voice calling you to gather here today in this cause.” The NAACP head asked for silence, and a moment almost cinematic in its poignancy passed over the marchers. Saddened, though unsurprised by Wilkins’s announcement, Rachel Davis DuBois (“the mother of intercultural education”) wondered aloud at that moment if Du Bois’s spirit, “now free from his body, in some mysterious way might have hovered in our midst.” Unrelated by ties of blood or marriage to the legendary old icon, she had known and loved him deeply much of her life. Jim Aronson, another white Du Bois stalwart, would write in the Socialist weekly, the Guardian, of an aged, black woman in the crowd weeping, “ ‘It’s like Moses. God had written that he should never enter the promised land.’ “3 Aronson left unsaid what all who had known him at the end understood, that Du Bois had finally concluded that this weeping woman’s promised land was a cruel, receding mirage for people of color. And so he had chosen to live out his last days in West Africa.

Legendary Dr. Du Bois (for few had ever dared a more familiar direct address) appeared to have timed his exit for maximum symbolic effect. Someone told the actor Sidney Poitier and the writers James Baldwin and John Killens the news while they were standing with several others in the lobby of Washington’s Willard Hotel early that morning. “ ‘The Old Man died.’ Just that. And not one of us asked, ‘What old man?’ “ Killens recalled.4 In a real sense, Du Bois was seen by hundreds of thousands of Americans, black and white, as the paramount custodian of the intellect that so many impoverished, deprived, intimidated, and desperately striving African-Americans had either never developed or found it imperative to conceal. His chosen weapons were grand ideas propelled by uncompromising language. Lesser mortals of the race—heads of civil rights organizations, presidents of colleges, noted ministers of the Gospel—conciliated, tergiversated, and brought back from white bargaining tables half loaves for their people. Never Du Bois. Not for him the tea and sympathy of interracial conferences or backdoor supplications, hat in hand and smile fixed, in patient anticipation of greater understanding or guilt-ridden, one-time-only concessions. From an Olympus of scholarship and opinion, he waved his pen and, as he wrote later, attempted “to explain, expound and exhort; to see, foresee and prophesy, to the few who could or would listen.” Many, many listened, and one who did, Percival Prattis, the aggressive editor of the influential Pittsburgh Courier, wrote proudly at the time of the Old Man’s McCarthy-era trial as a foreign agent, “They could not look at him and call me inferior.”5

Born in Massachusetts in the year of Andrew Johnson’s impeachment and dead ninety-five years later in the year of Lyndon Johnson’s installation, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois cut an amazing swath through four continents (he was a Lenin Peace Prize laureate and his birthday was once a national holiday in China), writing sixteen pioneering or provocative books of sociology, history, politics, and race relations. In his eighties, he found time to finish a second autobiography and produce three large historical novels, complementing the two large works of fiction written in the first two de cades of the twentieth century. The first African-American to earn a Harvard doctorate, he claimed later that it was a consolation for having been denied the few additional months needed to take a coveted doctorate in economics from the University of Berlin. Excellent Reference Book; Lacking in Other Areas

This is an abridged version of a previous two volume biography by the author. In an era when many (incorrectly) surmise that all information can be acquired online, the author provides a detailed reference book for scholars of twentieth century American radicalism and African-American history.
This work is not an easy read. The writing style is dense, and previous historical knowledge is needed in order to make it through. It seems likely that the abridgement process left this one volume work quite concise, but sometimes out of context.

About the Author
Raleigh Trevelyan, a descendant of Sir Walter Raleigh, was for many years a distinguished publisher; his previous books include The Fortress and Rome 44. During the last two decades he has combed British, Spanish, Italian, and his own family's archives to write this authoritative life. Sir Walter Raleigh was a London Sunday Times Book of the Year. Mr. Trevelyan lives in London and Cornwall.

Excellent book for Elizabethan fans

This book has compelled me to write my first ever review. I've rarely read a more enjoyable biography. Although long and very dense, it is well cross-referenced, and well structured.

The depth of research is astounding, and I was particularly impressed that the author had actually traveled to all the key locations, offering a level of colour and feel not otherwise possible.

There is also a great detail of content outside of Sir Walter's own life that is immensely valuable for providing context (so important when reading about another time and place). For this amateur Elizabethan student, the opportunity to read about my favourite characters and the key events of the age from a different perspective was truly enjoyable.

At times the book shows the author's bias, but he carefully lets us know when it's his opinion, and I for one welcomed it based on his depth of knowledge.

Bravo to the author, and to those considering reading this book, a big word of encouragement. Enjoy!

A Well-Reasoned Raleigh, Without Rhyme

This book is emphatically NOT what one might generally suspect from someone claiming, as the author admits, "tenuous" claims to lineage with Sir Walter: a hagiography. Rather, it is an exceedingly well-researched, meticulously organised appraisal of the man and his times. Particularly impressive to the reader will be the author's footwork to visit and record his impressions of all the places around the globe to which Sir Walter himself actually voyaged in his long career. These excursions made by the author, the descriptions and photographs of these places as they exist in our age, serve to bring the vibrant Elizabethan age closer to our own. Also, Trevelyan is always ready to point out the gaps in our knowledge of what actually transpired; the biography is strewn with questions such as: What could this mean? Who was this person? What was in this particular letter? Etc. If anything, Trevelyan perhaps takes too many pains to show that he is not penning any sort of hagiography. To this reader, at least, it seemed that the he could cut loose a bit more, as his forbear does in his writings, and write a little more con brio.

But this is a small complaint: In the end, we are left with an extremely well-rounded picture of the man, with his many faults, great daring, immense learning, who fought his way up from the lower ranks of society to be one of the men, at least in England and America, deemed one of history's true greats. It is hard to envision a better and more carefully written biography of Raleigh, barring the discovery of new documents, which may well happen. It's really quite amazing to learn how many documents, previously thought lost, have been discovered in the past 50 years, such as a will of Raleigh's discovered in a privy in the 1950s.

I do have one major complaint: To any lover of literature, to which Trevelyan makes no claim, this book cannot but be a disappointment. Raleigh's poems are printed incomplete, with whole stanzas ripped out for no apparent reason. It's almost enough to make one weep to see how the soaring poem "The Lie" is butchered here.

So, my advice is to have a copy of Raleigh's poems close at hand whilst reading the book. They are too much a part of the man to leave them in the state Trevelyan heedlessly does.

New insight - legend or fop?

It is recognized that the author as a descendant of Raleigh would be somewhat biased in his assessment of his subject. With this in mind the portrayal is more balanced than one would think from the preconception and the views of others on this book. The conception most often associated with Raleigh for those unaware of his breadth of activities is that of a dandily dressed (Vincent Price) fop who laid down his cape for the queen. If one delves a little farther into common knowledge we know that he had something to do with the failed Roanoke colony. The gift of Trevelyan's biography is to fill out these clothes. To put flesh upon the man who inhabits the foppish attire. By the time the book takes us to Raleigh's second stay in the Tower, and Trevelyan tells us that people often came to see "the legend" on his daily walks upon the wall, we believe that indeed he was exactly that - a legend. The true measure of biography is that it gives the faults and failings, yet lets one follow the maturing person. Raleigh, indeed had many failings, but he nonetheless comes across in Trevelyan's telling as a compelling and interesting individual. If the Queen, Cecil (Wm.), Walsingham, and Drake are the gods of that era, then certainly the Raleigh of Trevelyan's telling is a giant. The mark of good non-fiction is that it encourages further exploration into the era in which it is set. Trevelyan's book is a must read for those with any interest in this period of English history, particularly that touching on the rise of empire and the role of maritime successes.
