An accessible balanced approach to drug action

This is the third edition of this book that I own. As a dual diagnosis counselor I have found this book to be an invaluable resource. The psychopharmacology of both drugs of abuse and mental health medications are explained in a detailed manner that is very accessible. I find it a valuable resource in helping me educate clients about drug action.

Excellent text and reference support for material

This book is an excellent synthesis of pharmacology and research based comments on drug pharmacology. To the point, not a bunch of extra gobbeltigook text to wade through like in Uppers, Downers and Allarounders. I work in the addiction field and this book covers the topic well in terms of neurochemistry as well as effects of drugs and their effects and legitmate uses, as well as some history on them. It also covers pharmacological treatment of drug addictions, again something that I use in my field. I use this book as a reference in my work. The references cited in the book are extensive and they are noted (numerically) after each statement in the text, which I prefer. I have often looked up the references for more information, although usually this text provides the information I need without a bunch of parenthetical B.S.

The reason I did not rate this book 5 stars is because I have a paperback version and the binding fell apart. I feel a paperback should not fall apart unless I got it used at a garage sale. So I am looking to see if they have a hard bound version of this book.

Haynes, who was a captain at Iwo Jima, and military historian Warren (American Spartans) revisit familiar ground in this account of the 1945 Pacific battle, relying heavily on Haynes's own memories of serving with the 28th Marine Combat Team. The 28th landed with the initial assault on February 19, 1945, capturing Mount Suribachi after four days despite fierce opposition. While America cheered the famous flag-raising photograph, fighting continued for another month during which most of the 28th became casualties. The book is not a critical analysis of events. The short biographies of senior officers contain only praise; the enlisted men are colorful but dedicated; controversies that surrounded the invasion's planning and execution appear, but the authors do not take sides. Even the Japanese appear as brave and skillful soldiers. The book's first half, which ends with the invasion, will hold most readers, but the conquest of the island, page after page of gruesome, almost suicidal small-unit actions against an enemy that fought to the death, may lose all but Marine aficionados. Major General Fred Hayes and James A. Warren have achieved the historian's dream of telling tale so well that although the end of it is already known to us, we read on to find out what happens next. The momentum of the action during the six-week battle for Iwo Jima in 1945 creates an unforgettable impression. The angry roar of battle will remain with the reader for a long time.

Dramatic in the extreme, the secret here is the strong blending of memoir and personal narrative provided by authors General Hayes, then a Captain and the last surviving member of the planning team and veteran of the battle, and by James Warren, author of an acclaimed history of the Marines from Iwo Jima to Iraq.

"The Lions of Iwo Jima" tells the full story of the three assault battalions of Combat Team 28 from their training to the landing on February 19, 1945, the seminal battle for Mt. The foster parents ("the kind people who had taken care of her") are pictured. The first day includes the first telling of the adoption story to the baby girl, "You grew like a flower in another lady's tummy." However, the first couple of illustrations are problematic. On the first spread, a baby is shown alone on a hillside sitting on a beanbag cloud with a city in the distance. The text states: "Once upon a time a teeny-tiny baby was born." Babies aren't born alone on hillsides, and even though this one is smiling, the picture doesn't seem reassuring. Adopted children need to know that they were born like other children, and did not appear magically without human connection. A happy, colorful book about a man and woman dreaming of their soon-to-be-born adopted baby, receiving the news of her birth, and flying to the ``faraway place'' where they meet their child. Based on Katz's experience adopting a Central American infant and bright with mixed-media illustrations suggestive of folk art, this is a book for adults to use with children who were adopted in similar circumstances. The message is reassuring: ``Forever and always we will be your mommy and daddy. Forever and always you will be our child.'' The birth mother is gently described as another lady in whose tummy ``you grew like a flower,'' but who ``wasn't able to take care of you, so Mommy and Daddy came to adopt you and bring you home.'' The baby has dark hair like the mother's and dark eyes like both parents' but with duskier skin than either. As in Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell's Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born (1996), both text and pictures are suffused with anticipation and joyful welcome at the baby's arrival. Love this Book

This is about the best book we have that deals with how we became a family - hands down! Our daughter was born in China as is our Number #2 daughter who we are expecting any day now. I found alot of the "classics" in the "how we became a family" to be not my cup of tea or piece of crazy cake, as it were."Over the Moon" approaches the "how you were born" subject so beautifully that we felt comfortable reading it to our 3 year old (over and over and over........) and would have felt comfortable reading it to her 2 years ago! A very gentle, happy, gorgeous book!

Wonderful Adoption Story

Over the Moon is a vibrantly illustrated and beautifully written tale about international adoption. My five year old son asks for me to read it to him frequently. The author took care to use positive adoption language throughout the book, i.e. "You grew like a flower in another lady's tummy until you were born. But the lady wasn't able to take care of you, so Mommy and Daddy came to adopt you and bring you home." This is an appropriate reference to the adoption triad. The book describes a South American adoption but easily translates to our Korean adoption since we traveled to Korea to bring home our son. I also enjoyed the author's description of the extended family and community's enthusiasim over the arrival of this special baby. Over the Moon is a heart warming book your child will ask for again and again.

I love this book!

As the mother of a 3-year old adopted from China, I've bought quite a few adoption-related children's books, and I like many of them. But this one I love! Although it's not directly tied to Chinese adoptions, the story is similar to ours (we're a 2-parent family; we adopted a baby; we traveled to get her). The illustrations are lovely and the story captures the happy anticipation we felt as we waited for our child. Most importantly, the author gave me words to use in explaining my daughter's birth to her: "You grew like a flower in another lady's tummy until you were born. The lady couldn't take care of you so Mommy and Daddy came to adopt you and bring you home." I just love those 2 sentences and feel grateful to have them. And my daughter asks me to read this book just about every day!

An Eye Opening Account of Class Issues in America

Most books about race and class in America tend toward the macroscopic, marshalling their arguments behind surveys, statistics, and broad statements of theory or conjecture. Case studies or anecdotes about specific individuals are presented, if at all, to illustrate and particularize from whatever generalized conclusions their authors happen to be espousing. Such works of course serve useful purposes, but they can seem coldly impersonal, lacking any sense of the human lives that comprise all those statistics. Only occasionally do writers like Studs Terkel or Barbara Ehrenreich come along to put a human face on these issues.

Journalism, on the other hand, revels in the particular. Human drama provides the attraction, and individual stories create the base from which to propel the writer into broader statements of issues and positions. Thus, it is hardly surprising that CLASS MATTERS, a book compiled from stories previously published about class in America by the New York Times, should consist largely of anecdotes.

That it works so well is a tribute not just to the writers themselves, but to the editorial framers of this collection. CLASS MATTERS addresses the great taboo of America, the myth of a classless society. Never does the book claim that American life is caste-bound or separated into rigid classes. Rather, the opening chapter asserts that while class mobility still exists (that is, one can be born poor and lower class but, through dint of steady self-application in school and hard work thereafter, the opportunities for "upgrading" oneself are effectively limitless), the degree of such mobility has lessened considerably in the last 30 years. Never has it been more true that the best choice one can make in life is one's choice of parents, and economic trends and (especially) Republican public policy are only exacerbating the problem.

The bulk of CLASS MATTERS is taken up with extended newspaper articles that articulate various aspects of class in America and its effect on people's lives. For example, the opening chapter details the crises of three individuals who suffered heart attacks - how their responses, emergency care, choice of doctors and treatments, and follow-up care differed according to their socioeconomic class. Other stories document interclass marriages (she upper, he lower), a lawyer whose return to her Appalachian roots forces her confront class differences, an immigrant Mexican restaurant worker in New York struggling to survive while working for a successful, Greek immigrant boss, and an upward-striving family of corporate nomads bouncing from one big city bedroom community (like Alpharetta, Georgia) to another.

CLASS MATTERS occasionally detours (to its positive credit) away from pure case history reporting to discuss more general topics. One of the most telling concerns the dropout rate in American four-year colleges (only 41% of low income students manage to graduate within five years) and the increasingly middle-class nature of those colleges' student bodies. As Anthony Marx, President of Amherst College, is quoted as saying, "If we are blind to educational disadvantages associated with need, we will simply replicate these disadvantages while appearing to make decisions based on merit." In one simple statement, Mr. Marx hits dead-on the most crucial educational issue of 21st Century America. Other chapters discuss the treatment of class in American fiction and cinema and the efforts of corporate marketers (BMW, Godiva, cruise lines) to downscale their products to lower classes while retaining the aura of upper class luxury.

The book's closing chapter, "Angela Whitaker's Climb," is by far its most affecting piece. The story describes the Herculean efforts of Ms. Whitaker, a middle-aged Chicagoan with five children by nearly as many different fathers, to turn her life around through nursing school. A tenth grade high school dropout and a former crack addict, she loses two of her sons to the streets but manages to get an Associate's Degree, pass her nursing exams, and find professional employment that puts her solidly into middle class life. Yet every day is a precarious balance: struggling to make ends meet, keeping her children on the right path, and satisfying the financial needs of her extended family. While Ms. Whitaker's story is touching for its emblematic demonstration of the Horatio Alger myth, her difficulties in achieving success make it clear that she is unusual, one in perhaps ten thousand, or maybe one in a million. Her success is admirable, but it is the extraordinary odds against that success that make her story a chilling, almost frightening tale of class in America.

We are not a classless society

I read two of the articles in this book when they originally came out in the NY Times and I'm glad they are out in a book form so that they can be read by everyone. The sociologist James Loewen in his book, Lies My Teacher Taught Me, said that the way history is taught in American high schools makes us "stupider" about social class because the subject is entirely avoided. Many Americans think we live in a classless society, one big, happy middle class, though the contrary is true (look how suburban subdivisions are divided by house prices, even on signs: the 300-399K development, the 499 and up, the 899K and up, the 100-159 "starter homes", and so on). A strength of this book for the general reading public is that it approaches class divisions in a number of different ways (healthcare, education, etc) by examining the lives of real people. This is a sociology text that uses concrete instances to elucidate general themes.

When I attended Haverford College in the late 1970s and early 1980s after having grown up in a poor, working class neighborhood, I was struck by encountering people who were far more urbane, well-traveled, well-spoken, and well-dressed than I was. It was intimidating, but I learned to be a member of this world (I chuckle now at how kids made fun of my "accent" and corrected my grammar while I was speaking to them) and for the rest of my life I've been going between worlds, conscious of how I speak and act in each (I've "escaped" the social class I grew up in). Because of these experiences this book really resonates with me and I'm sure it will resonate with people who have had similar experiences. For everyone else, it is a welcome introduction to what we Americans are "stupid" about: social stratification in American society and how it determines our behavior, our opportunities, and our health.

This was a comical little story that will tickle little funny bones!

Jeremy was peeking out the window of his apartment on the third floor of a brick building. He never left his own room, but he could see the children playing down below. He had drawn pictures of a cat, a dog, a bunny and an airplane and he decided to take "out his fancy pen" and began to draw a monster. He started near the top of the ceiling, down the wall and across the floor. He took his "fancy pen" drew and drew and filled it in. A few spikes on the head, wide spaced eyes, a cute nose, short arms and legs, a number three on its tummy and a spiked tail and he was done. Or so he thought, because the monster had different ideas!

The monster wanted a sandwich and so Jeremy began to draw again. He gulped it up and was totally rude because he "did not say thank you." He wanted a toaster, a record player, a checkerboard and a comfortable chair. Those crayons were whirling to keep up with the requests. Next he wanted a television. Of course when you have one you need a hot dog. On and on went the monster, getting ruder by the minute. "Are you going to sit there all day? Draw me a hat. I'm going out!" It was nice to have a monster, but this was getting ridiculous. How was he going to get rid of this big pest?

This was a comical little story that will tickle little funny bones. I've heard of things like Build a Bear and when Jeremy built his own monster with his crayon it was totally novel and fun. I liked the quick progression of the story. The more things the monster wanted, the sillier it got. The artwork was simple, childlike and very appealing. Monsters can sometimes be seen as scary things, but this one was just a pest, a fact that won't be lost on the parent of a fearful child. If you have an imaginative youngster that would like to have his or her funny bone tickled, this might be one you should consider!

Simple, beautiful, entertaining.

Unique, beautifully rendered illustrations and a simple, sweet and funny storyline make this book one of our new favorites to read with our 1-year old daughter. It will entertain readers of all ages (even 36+, as the monster's quirky demands leave me giggling each time we read it). Perfect length for bedtime, too.

I have read this book to my 3 year-old preschool class twice and they love it! I love reading it tot hem too! It's funny, not too wordy and has lessons hidden in there too (saying thank you and how to make friends). Looking forward to reading it again.

Colorful pages show a toddler in an easy pose opposite an animal in a similar position. The book is fun to share, even in a group storytime, while letting children do their own thing. Back matter includes explanations of the poses and general tips on practice for adults. A photo spread shows children practicing the postures. Some of them involve movement, which is not made clear from either the drawings or photographs, though it is explained in the notes. The author emphasizes that this is not a manual but an invitation to have fun and relax together; the book works well on that level. Fun for my Tot!

My two year old enjoys this book quite alot. I am constantly surprised by the times and places she'll begin her yoga sessions, any where from the beach to the doctors office. Though I have not made it a part of our every day as I'd wanted to, the images and poses really seem to stick with her. Its a nice little book. Short and sweet, the poses are adapted for the very young, but if you have fun with it your child will too.

A great introduction to yoga

I wanted to teach my two year old some basic yoga positions and this book is a perfect starting point. Each page has a cute illustration showing how to do one pose (hang like a bat, curl up like a mouse, etc.) At the end of the book are photographs of an actual child doing each pose. This is a great book to introduce the concept of yoga to a little one.

Fun before bed

My 1-1/2 year old loves to read this before bed and to try out the different poses. I'm not sure it actually makes her particularly sleepy but she enjoys it and it's fun to watch her blink like an owl. I like that in the back of the book there are more in depth explanations on how to do each pose.

Best book on Dee yet!

For 25 years I have read & collected everything on John Dee I could find, even to the point of ordering the Sloan MSS fron the British museum. My only complaint about this effort is that it wasn't longer. It reads like a novel. This is the daily life of one of the most fascinating people in British history. Occultists will get clarity on the nature of the Angelic workings, Alchemists get a glimpse of the nature of the craft, students of history are drawn into the gritty reality of fifteenth century Europe. This book carried me through from beginning to end in only two sittings. I couldn't put it down. Well done Woolley!

Combining Science and the Supernatural...

Dr. John Dee is now considered to be the English Renaissance man. This was not always the case, however, because his first biographers, as the author of this fine biography points out, were either `hard-headed rationalist or muddle-headed mystics.' In present time, researchers and historians agree that Dee was a true Renaissance man because he sought to connect or reconcile rationalism with magic, science and the supernatural. This was not unusual for the time. Copernicus cited the mystic Hermes Trismegistus in his Magnum Opus, proposing the heliocentric universe. Isaac Newton began his career as an alchemist, before moving on to modern methods of pure science. John Dee was the most important scientists of the Elizabethan age. But this is only a somewhat recent recognition because throughout the ages he was considered a charlatan, crook, blockhead and "companion of hellhounds". Benjamin Woolley's fine biography combines history, science, espionage and common sense and attempts to answer how a man of genius that had such a major influence in mathematics, astronomy, cartography, navigation and science in general, could die a pauper and in obscurity.
In 1659, a scholar by the name of Meric Casaubon copied and published a collection of Dee's documents, which contained the recordings of spiritual conversations with angels and archangels, and other dialogues, which could be interpreted dubious at best. After the publication Dee's reputation as a credible philosopher went steadily down hill and has taken centuries to recover. Woolley has done some fine research, using Dee's actual diaries, and has painstakingly pieced together his life and career.
The Elizabethan age was a turning point in Western history. The Reformation was essentially a battle for power and knowledge and a bloody war in the name of religion. But it also set the stage for the Enlightenment, and Dr. John Dee was a precursor to the Age of Reason. He was a man of `science', collecting and studying every ancient text he could get his hands on, (his library is the stuff of legend) but rational knowledge, he truly believed, would only take him so far - he desired heavenly knowledge and wisdom. And it is possible that his spiritual researches into the divine nature could have been the cause of his downfall. Dee did not seek worldly gain, riches and material pleasure; his only desire was to attain the secrets of the Holy. Did he pay the ultimate price for this activity?
~The Queen's Conjurer~ is not a dense historical text, but an informative and enlightening piece of research. It casts some light on an intriguing figure, removing him from modern occult history and in to the mainstream.

The book is not as interesting as the man was

John Dee was an amazing man: astrologer, astronomer, alchemist, linguist, cryptographer, mathematician, geographer, and either a tremendous con man or (more likely) the unwitting dupe of a tremendous con man; this book is surprisingly flat, by comparison. The tone is pretty calm and straightforward, and Woolley leaves out some of the more outlandish things I've heard about Dee, and normally those would be positive qualities in a biography. But for a biography of a life as bizarre as Dee's it feels a bit wanting; for example, the visions of his associate, the fraudulent Edward Kelley, are reported in some detail, with only the occasional aside that, of course, Kelley must have been making it all up, but Dee believed them and this book is about Dee so we won't go into that. For instance, Kelley disliked his wife and lusted after Dee's, and so convinced Dee that the spirits commanded them to sleep with each other's wife; Woolley reports that Dee was troubled by this, but doesn't really make you *feel* his trouble.

Another minor fault with the book is that it's not well suited to reading up on just one phase of Dee's life: the chapters aren't in strict chronological order and are untitled: so a chapter on a new topic will overlap the previous chapter a bit, but being untitled you don't know what the new topic is without reading it. At least the index is good. (Three or four chapters at a time are grouped together in sections, and the sections do have titles. Not terribly informative titles, like "The Flight of the Dung Beetle" on his childhood and early education, or "The Long Journey" which is *not* about his several-year trip to Poland and Bohemia.) Also, Woolley's subtraction isn't always accurate: several chapters begin along the lines "It was the year 15xx, and Dee was y years old," only he wouldn't have been y.

Still, Dr. Dee was this really amazing guy and Woolley's research is good, and even the flat style can't make this a bad book.
