When Shellenbarger wrote about her midlife crisis in one of her Wall Street Journal "Work & Family" columns, reader response was overwhelming. So she decided to investigate those "psychological and spiritual upheavals [that] have been mistaken for menopause symptoms and reduced to a biological phenomenon." Relying on interviews with 50 women between their late 30s and mid-50s and four studies of aging—and heavily indebted to a Jungian perspective—this catchy work is tailor-made for the "36% of women who will eventually have what they regard as midlife crises" (and it's right up the Oprah and Dr. Phil alley, too). Shellenbarger delineates six archetypes: the Adventurer, the Lover, the Leader, the Artist, the Gardener and the Seeker, who meet the crisis through six modes of transition (Sonic Boom, Moderate, Slow Burn, Flameout, Meltdown and Non-Starter). Sue Shellenbarger is the creator and writer of the Wall Street Journal's Work & Family column. The former chief of the Journal's Chicago news bureau, Shellenbarger started the column in 1991 to provide the nation's first regular coverage of the growing conflict between work and family and its implications for the workplace and society.

Could be much more...

As a career consultant who works with midlife professionals, and a fan of Sue Shellenbarger, I was eager to read The Breaking Point. And mostly I was not disappointed.

I like the way Shellenbarger treats midlife crisis respectfully, rather than comparing midlife to a "second adolescence." She begins by exploring her own motivation and then sets out to understand the research in the field. I am familiar with the work of Professor Elaine Wethington, who is quoted to set the stage for a research perspective. However, I wish the author had reviewed other research and other respected authors, such as Jean Shinoda Bolen's work on goddesses of midlife.

Additionally, I was impressed that the author has interviewed fifty women. And, like many reporters, she makes her points by narrative rather than summing up.

On the other hand, I felt the book's organization could have been tighter. Shellenbarger identifies six archetypes: lover, adventurer, leader, gardener, artist and seeker. The book spends about 30 pages on the lover archetype, which Shellenbarger describes as potentially dangerous, and 15 pages each on the other archetypes. Was the lover predominant in her own study? Or did she (and the editors) believe this archetype would draw the greatest interest from readers?

It would have been interesting to get at least two or three stories for each archetype. The Gardener, for instance, is represented only by "Melanie." Following a series of career mistakes and miscarriages, the author writes, "For most of her adult life, Melanie...regarded herself as a 'happpy, active sensible person with a couople of good friends, a good marriage and a loveable son.'" (p 154)

Yet the archeype of Gardener suggests someone who has roamed the world and now is ready to come home. Why not give some examples here?

Shellenbarger wisely classifies her book as journalism, with no pretense of advice or self-help exercises. Even so, it is important to recognize that the fifty interviewees will be far from representative. They've offered to share their stories, which means they had time to do so, and they apparently believed their stories presented a positive image. They may have experienced some setbacks but they've triumphed.

Ultimately, an indirect lesson of this book is that midlife crisis belongs to the rich and educated. One woman begins twice-weekly sessions with a psychiatrist. All I could think was, "She must have had one great health plan -- or lots of money." These options are not open to most women 40-60. Many find themselves facing a more down-to-earth crisis as they lose jobs -- or their husbands lose jobs.

Bottom Line: Some women will be comforted or inspired as they recognize their own archetype. But the larger question relates to the way our culture and infrastructure still cling to old stereotypes. We may be getting stronger, more vibrant and more alive...but what do we do with these qualities?

This is a must read book for any woman approaching mid-life or well into it! Very insightful reading and most women will be able to relate to the information provided. The examples given of other women's experiences through this time of many changes are most helpful. I would very highly recommend this book.

Harvard-trained attorney David Wolfe, a San Franciscan on the verge of a congressional campaign, has his plans derailed when his law school classmate (and one-time lover), Palestinian Hana Arif, asks him to defend her from charges that she led a conspiracy that assassinated dovish Israeli leader Amos Ben-Aron. Inspired by idealism and lingering passion, Wolfe jeopardizes his political future by taking the case. His suspicion that the suicide bombers who attacked Ben-Aron were aided by a security breach leads him to Israel and Lebanon. While Patterson (Conviction) attempts to portray the issues fairly, the introduction of a soap-operaish subplot undercuts his intended high purpose, and the resolution of the mystery is too predictable to surprise. 10-city author tour. Patterson, the author of 13 previous best-selling novels, turns his focus to the Israeli-Palestinian crisis in this overly long novel. The characterization is cardboard, with lawyer-hero David Wolfe cast as a golden boy of good looks and keen intelligence, whose well-planned life comes apart with the reappearance of a Palestinian woman with whom he had a passionate love affair more than a decade ago. The writing is schmaltzy and stiff, but there is probably enough in the plot to hold Patterson fans. The prime minister of Israel, while visiting the States, is blown up by a suicide bomber. Wolfe's lover, the Palestinian Hana Arif, is suspected of orchestrating the bombing. The novel delves into Wolfe's past and Hana and her husband's history in Palestine, and it involves Wolfe traveling to Israel and the West Bank. Action abounds, culminating in courtroom drama. This novel would be much more gripping, however, if Patterson kept a tighter rein on his prose; his tendency is to overexplain his characters and overwrite every scene. But those excesses haven't deterred his fans yet, and they aren't likely to do it this time, either. Connie Fletcher

An Excellent Book!

At one time I was an avid reader of Richard North Patterson's books which I always enjoyed. But it had been some time sinceI picked up one of his books and with thsi in mind I couldn't wait to begin Exile: A Novel. And what an excellent read this turned out to be.

David Wolfe seems to have everything. A good job as a lawyer in San Francisco, engaged to a wonderful woman, he also is being slated to run for Congress. But with one phone call that about to all change. Thirteen years before, Hana Arif a Palestinian woman studying in the United States, met David at Harvard where he was a law student. They had a love affair for several months but she returned to the Middle East against David's protests and married a fellow Palestinian. Now her phone call to David is to say she is visiting the states with her husband and their 12 year old daughter. When she asks David to meet them for lunch, he is hesitant realizing his former feelings for Hana. A few days after David hears from her, the Prime Minister of Israel is assassinated while he is visiting San Francisco. And all fingers point to Hana as the woman who masterminded this assassination. When Hana is arrested for the murder, she asks David to defend her. But David a Jew while thinking about Hana must decide if he will risk everything to defend her or if he is willing to let somebody else do this and possibly fail.

This was an excellent novel which doesn't take sides, but tries to explain the plight of both the Jews and the Palestinians. Two people who feel that Israel belongs to them and with little hope of settling this in the near future. The author offers novel while filled with suspense also offer readers a view of both sides and the difficulties of this living in Israel and those who are exiles from this country. I highly recommend this book.

a revelation and an education

Some years ago, my wife and I were dining with an Israeli couple in Haifa. We were discussing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Finally the Israeli man said: "You Americans think all problems have a solution. This one doesn't." Richard North Patterson has written a splendid book that uses the story of a Palestinian woman accused of complicity in the assassination of the Israeli Prime Minister and defended by her Jewish former lover to create an even-handed compassion for both sides of the bitter tribal conflict. Once hooked on the legal thriller aspect of the story. we avidly follow the lawyer's dangerous exploration of the conspiracy wherever it might lead. It takes us to Israel, to the West Bank, and to Lebanon where we meet a variety of people who have been touched and wounded by the conflict in a variety of ways. The legal theatics are gripping, as they always are in a Patterson novel, but this time the deeper impact of making this journey is a more profound empathy for the people caught up in this tragic situation in which everyone, according to their own lights, is right . For this book, 5 stars is not enough. I recommend it to you with all my heart.

Entertaining and Incredibly Informative

The middle east conflict is, in my opinion, the hardest problem facing humanity in the whole world. Understanding all the nuances, from both sides could be a major academic undertaking. Getting perspectives from key, leading figures could require incredible access for interviews and a huge amount of research and reading.

Richard North Patterson takes all the boring, grunt work out of this and turns the process into a gripping read with great characters. He's done way more than basic homework, more like a dissertation, but being a great novelist, he's weaved in an education on the middle east conflict that not only provides a satisfying stimulating, stay up until you drop in the middle of the night read, but also a serious education.

My Kudos to Patterson for doing more than just writing a brilliant novel. This book could contribute to progress towards peace.

The daughter of impecunious transcendentalist Bronson Alcott and long-suffering Abigail May, as a girl Louisa Alcott watched her father preach esoteric uplift while practicing the penury that impoverished the family. Bronson's redeeming trait, Reisen speculates, may have been temporary insanity. The sadder case was Alcott's mother—the model for Marmee in Little Women—an intelligent woman harnessed to a man in search of the ineffable and, on occasion, young female acolytes. Louisa appointed herself the Golden Goose of these needy nurturers. Churning out what Reisen calls the chick-lit of its day to provide her mother and sisters the material comforts she never had, Alcott also used her imagination, according to Reisen, to escape the confines of ordinary life, although for Bronson Alcott's daughter, ordinary life was not all that ordinary; Reisen calculates that the family moved at least 30 times by Alcott's 20s. About the Author

Harriet Reisen’s interest in Louisa May Alcott dates to her marathon reading of Alcott’s eight children’s novels during a rainy spell one childhood summer. Over the past twenty years, what began as an idea for a film biography of Alcott developed into a passion for the subject herself. A former fellow in screenwriting at the American Film Institute, Reisen has written dramatic and historical documentary scripts for PBS and HBO, and radio commentary for Morning Edition and Marketplace. She lives in Massachusetts.

The Real Louisa May Alcott

Louisa May Alcott has always been a favorite author of mine. I have read a few biographies(years ago with the exception of Little Women Abroad, Alcott in Her Own Time) about her life and have read all of her books. So when this new biography came up I was interested but I wondered if anything knew could be written about the author that everyone seems to forget.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. As others have said it is an easy read, not weighed down with academic writing that makes one want to fall asleep. Yet it is obvious that the author has done her research.

The book starts out with a history of Abigail and Bronson's family history, how they meet and their early marriage. This sets the stage for the childhood that Louisa and her sisters will experience. The interesting thing about this book is that it describes Bronson's life but I found out more about Mrs. Alcott than I ever knew. Everyone neglects her and always focuses on Bronson which is a crime since she was the one who worked the hardest. For instance I was unaware that she had been left for long periods of time with the children while Bronson went off trying to make money. Nor did I know that she had so many miscarriages and nearly died as a result. Another thing that was interesting to me is that Louisa seemed more like her mother yet most biographers continue to say that Louisa was like her father.

The Real Louisa May Alcott is brought out in this book. The author does not sugarcoat things, she does not try to make Louisa into some Victorian model of womanhood(if that was even possible). What the author tries to do is explain who Louisa was faults and all. Those faults do not make Louisa bad, just human, like the rest of us.

Louisa was a rash, naughty child who was spanked for not sitting down properly at the dinner table. She would often hit her older sister and when Elizabeth was born she hated her. Louisa often confused her father with her outbursts and her rage. Abigail felt a kinship with her daughter because she shared the same faults. Yet despite her flaws Louisa was determined to make something of herself. She saw how her mother toiled, how her father lacked common sense, and she wanted to help her family. Louisa longed for nice things as everyone else and she wanted to erase the family debt.

The biography trails Louisa's life, her trials and her victories. While I have read all this before the author gave me new information. I have read about the Fruitlands experience but I cannot recall anyone mentioning Abigail's distrust or Mr. Lane. I remember descriptions of what happened but not the amount of detail that Ms. Reisen provides.

The book covers every aspect of Louisa's life. Her stint as a Civil War nurse, her trip abroad, the success of Little Women and so much more.

Yet even when she gained success she still wasn't happy. Louisa hid from her admirers and didn't seem to like them much. Louisa complained that her family seemed eager to take her money and she wondered when she would enjoy it. There are also some quotes from Lulu, May's daughter, which are insightful. Louisa seems to have showered Lulu with expensive dresses and toys(things she never received).

I enjoyed this book very much and I highly recommend it. I hope that with this book and the new documentary that Louisa May Alcott will be rediscovered for the amazing talent she was. She will no longer be remembered as just a childrens author who is constantly swept under the rug so authors like Dickens and Austen can be praised.

This was a timely read for me. I visited Orchard House, the Alcott family home, a few years ago, and found the place surreal. It was easy to picture the family living there. I stood next to Louisa's writing table and learned that she had to become ambidextrous because she was sorely misusing the one hand. I admired her sister, May's room where the walls were filled with her drawings. After the tour, I purchased a small print of an owl that had been painted by May Alcott. I also bought a print of Orchard House. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and the two prints are in the room that I call my library. Finally, in a box of old books, that were recently given to me, I found a book containing five thrillers that had been written by the amazing Louisa May Alcott.

Well, along came THE WOMAN BEHIND LITTLE WOMEN by Harriet Reisen, and I was ready. The book is fascinating. I sincerely applaud the author for her excellent research. Although, this book has a lot of very detailed information, it held my interest.

Louisa's father, Bronson Alcott was an intellectual who became involved with the transcendental movement. He was a teacher, and had many different schools over the years, but they usually failed as his methods seemed too unorthodox to most people. His marriage to Abigail May produced 4 daughters. The family were constantly moving and Bronson often left his wife and children for months at a time fulfilling his intellectual pursuits. Mrs. Alcott, was left alone to care for her family. During the years, she experience five miscarriages. Of course, her health suffered, and she almost died during one miscarriage. Bronson was rarely there when she needed him most.

Louisa May Alcott, was the second of the daughters and we're told that she was a difficult and stubborn child. She was often disciplined by her father because she was too willful! Her life was spent in the company of some of the most famous men in New England. Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Nathaniel Hawthorne were all friends of the family. Over the years, those friends provided financial help to the Alcott's, as Bronson could never support his own family. Louisa's family spent most of their lives living on the good will and support of family and friends. Sometimes the family would be split up living in several different places and just waiting for a time that they could be together again. In later years, Louisa's success as a writer brought their dreams to fulfillment.

Writing a short review of this book is almost impossible and my words are only tidbits from the book. I came away with so much respect for Louisa! She worked hard for her entire life and when she finally received fame and fortune, she was surprised at the people who constantly sought her out for autographs and conversation. Her health was not good and it was peace and quiet that she sought and not scores of people wanting to meet and converse with her.

This book is a must read for the details of Louisa May Alcott's life! It also provides some interesting history of the Civil War. Louisa, herself worked in a hospital in Washington, D.C. nursing wounded soldiers. In fact, she contacted typhoid pneumonia and came close to dying from the experience.

Well-written, enjoyable read

This biography of Louisa May Alcott was a well-written, enjoyable read. Harriet Reisen gave a chronological account of the Alcott's lives while relating how the national events of the time effected them and how they influenced history (through their Transcendental movement, abolition movement, etc.). She also worked in many quotes taken from letters and the personal journals kept by each member of the family.

The first 87 pages were mainly about Louisa's parents (Abby and Bronson) and their friends. If you're interested in Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Thoreau, and other famous Transcendentalists, you'll probably enjoy this section more than I did. I was continually exasperated with her parents and, while I saw the value of showing the influences Louisa grew up with and how they affected her writing, I didn't like her parents and wanted to get on to focusing on Louisa.

From page 88 to 302, Harriet Reisen focused on Louisa and, to a lesser degree, her sisters. This section was lively and very fun to read though Louisa didn't have a very easy life. I liked how Harriet Reisen let us see Louisa's faults as well as her strong points and how she tied Louisa's experiences to her books: Louisa would often take real life events and work them into fictional accounts.

The rest of the book was references and notes about the quotes and information. There were no pictures. I would have at least enjoyed a picture of Louisa.

There was no bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable biography to anyone who loves Louisa May Alcott's novels and wants to know more about her.

Bioflux is responsible in some way for several biological phenomena dating from 1970 (when U.S. germ warfare was officially banned), among them the neural tube disorders that killed Lucys child, Gulf War syndrome and a strange and fatal illness that ravaged the Colorado prison system in the 1990s. Equipped with quirky characters, a quicksilver plot and chase scenes aplenty (especially when the government becomes involved), this novel makes up in spunk what it lacks in credibility. The biological weapons angle is patently unbelievable, as is the survival of this shaky triumvirate as they simultaneously challenge big business and government. In the real world theyd be dead in ditches or rotting in prison, but in Silers dirty but redeemable universe, everyone ends up on higher ground.

A low impact novel that falls short of being a real thriller

The subject of bioengineering and the notion of germ warfare are as timely today as they were decades ago. In the 1970s and early 1980s novelists began to write stories with these themes. Their mission has always been, and still is, to inform the public and to expose the kinds of experiments (allegedly) performed by drug companies and the government. In SHOT, Jenny Siler's new suspense novel, she adds her take, telling the story of the humans who are damaged after being subjected to such experiments.
Siler brings seven characters together who, for one reason or another, need to take possession of the information hidden in the files of a company that is doing research on mycoplasma ---"the smallest and simplest subclass of bacteria...capable of replicating itself...mycoplasma has no cell wall, enabling it to invade tissue and even white blood cells" --- which could cause serious immune system illnesses, since mycoplasma does not respond to any known antibiotic.
The "good guys" and the "bad guys" are clearly defined in this made-for-TV style novel. The prose is simple and direct, but the characters are not strong enough to make readers really care about them or their troubles. Instead of exploring in full the reason for her characters' actions (the biochemical/germ warfare programs), Siler chooses to concentrate on just moving the plot along. In taking this route, the writer loses a great opportunity to expose what, in our time, is a threat to the world as we now know it. Thus, the novel has a very low impact, and readers may find it difficult to get angry about the two murders, blackmail, robbery, and cover-up that destroy lives and have an everlasting impact on millions of people through the manufacture and testing of "dirty drugs."
With a plot that is so simply drawn, one-dimensional characters, and action confined to a small and claustrophobic arena, the novel loses its potential for being a real thriller. Some of the events in the book stretch credulity, and readers will find nothing more than an afternoon's escape in SHOT.

The death of her husband has brought more of a change to her life than Lucy ever could have imagined. She's on the run with only the help of a former friend (ex-MSNBC reporter, Kevin) and a new acquaintance (Darcy, the woman who broke into her home). They embark upon a research expedition that will take them from one area of the country to another picking up new information along the way which points to the presence of a biological weapons program tested on American soldiers.
The men behind that program are extremely powerful and don't want its existence brought to light. They'll do whatever it takes to prevent it.
Lucy's not about to be scared off, though. Her need to know has become an obsession...one that could get her and everyone around her killed.
Interspersed with the words that tell the main story is the freshness of originality brought on by Siler's use of non-cliched similes and metaphors. To add to the mix, the characters have real faces made thus by just enough background information to allow the reader to empathize with them.
Jenny Siler's peek into the world of biotechnology is both alarming and suspenseful. Her writing suggests a knowledge that shows she must have done her own research on the subject to make the book that much more believable.
Most importantly, there is a much-appreciated lack of the holier-than-thou attitude that could have come across with a subject such as this. The scientific aspects are put into terms that anyone can easily pick up and understand, making "Shot" an enjoyable - rather than confusing - read.

Pure Poetry

I liked this book so much that four hours after I had started and then finished it, I immediately ordered Jenny Siler's first two books: EASY MONEY and ICED. This is a well crafted story about the resourcefulness of a bright young widow who realizes after her husband's death that she had basically taken a back seat to her own life. That she had allowed her own persona to so completely merge with that of her husband Carl as to become almost faceless. Carl's death and a series of weird events help to shock Lucy back into the woman that she had left behind when she opted to marry Carl and his upper middle class world of privilege. Carl dies in an apparent automobile accident while on a purported business trip. A series of events propel Lucy into believing her husband's death was no accident. After Carl's funeral Lucy's house is broken into in the middle of the night; and her husband's home office searched by an intruder: nothing of value (to a "burglar") was taken A few days later a crew from her husband's employer, a biotech firm, gain entry into her house while she is not there: their purpose the men from her husband's office tell Lucy, when she surprises them by coming home earlier than anticipated, is to secure sensitive research work Carl may have been working on before his death: papers that the firm does not want to get into the wrong hands. Lucy's pursuit of the truth about her husband's death puts her on a collision course with corrupt government officials, ruthless business interests and a hired hit man (shades of David Baldacci's heroine Sidney Archer in TOTAL CONTROL). An ex-boyfriend and another woman who recently was released from prison ably assist Lucy. This unlikely trio travels some beautiful country in Colorado, Montana and Washington State in pursuit of Lucy's search for the truth. The action here is uniformly exciting. Lucy has all the courage and wiles of Baldacci's Sidney Archer and then some. The big surprise is Siler's use of language. Her adept lyrical style puts one in mind of another brilliant author: Stephanie Kane (BLIND SPOT). There are portions of SHOT that are pure poetry. For example: "...Far in the distance, Canada was an unbroken line of green, the densely forested shore of Vancouver Island shimmering like an inverted mirage, an oasis of sylvan land in the numbing expanse of sea. The light was liminal, deceptive. Houses winked from the woods, bright windows hidden behind waxy thickets of rhododendron, cedars soft with moss."
I absolutely can't wait to read Siler's two other novels.

Nice edition

This is probably the most nicely printed edition of Thornton W. Burgess' work currently in print.

Yes, all the original illustrations in the Little, Brown first editions of 1910 and 1911 are there, and they are full-size. They are not shiny like the originals, which were printed on art paper and tipped in (individually glued to the bound text pages). These are printed right on the text stock. it's pretty good text stock but does not compare to the art paper of a century ago. Also, since the reverse sides are printed with text, you cannot avoid seeing shadows of the text when viewing the illustrations. Get the originals if you can, but otherwise this is a nice substitute.

Two quibbles with the book's introduction:

First, the introduction mentions Burgess' "as-yet-uncounted magazine short stories".

That is not exactly true. Michael W. Dowhan wrote a meticulously thorough annotated bibliography of them in his "Thornton W. Burgess, Harrison Cady: A Book, Magazine, and Newspaper Bibliography" of 1990. He doesn't give a count except to say that there are nearly 900, but counting them right in the book would be short work.

Second, introduction says "Dover Publications is helping to make more and more Burgess books available to the public very year. All are carefully reproduced from the original first editions."

It isn't true that all of Dover's Burgess books are reproduced from the original first editions. Only a few have the illustrations from the first editions. Several have the illustrations from the 1940s & 1950s Grosset & Dunlap editions. Most have bad copies of one or the other set of illustrations by hack artists; those copies have none of the charm of the originals.

Like the Iliad best as a spoken tale with wonderful memory makin phrasing

Wonderful. I am reading it to my granddaughter. The last time I read it was as a child and I loved the stories. I did not realize that the rhythm and repetition was so delightful (0ld mother west wind, merry little breezes) much like the Iliad (rosy fingered dawn). Reading them aloud is great if you are lucky enough to have a child to read to, I highly recommend it.

In this brief, excellent volume written for Arthur Schlesinger's American Presidents series, Columbia professor emeritus Graff (The Tuesday Cabinet) picks up the often neglected Grover Cleveland, dusts him off and reminds us how substantial he was. After serving as mayor of Buffalo and governor of New York, Cleveland (1837-1908) was the first Democrat to be elected president after the Civil War. He forced America's railroad titans to return 81,000,000 western acres previously granted by the federal government and regulated them with the Interstate Commerce Act. Although defeated in the electoral college by Benjamin Harrison in 1888, Cleveland won the popular vote, which set the stage for his return to the presidency in 1892 in the midst of nationwide depression. As usual, Cleveland acted decisively. He repealed the inflationary Sherman Silver Purchase Act and, with the aid of Wall Street, maintained the Treasury's gold reserve. When Chicago railroad strikers violated an injunction against further disruption, Cleveland dispatched federal troops. Cleveland's no-nonsense treatment of the strikers stirred many Americans, as did the way he forced Great Britain to accept arbitration of a disputed boundary in Venezuela. But many of Cleveland's hard-hitting policies during the depression proved unpopular in the long term; in 1896, his party nominated William Jennings Bryan for the presidency. In clean, matter-of-fact prose, Graff sums up the plainspoken Cleveland as a man of action and uncompromising integrity a man who, though publicly identified as the father of a bastard child, nevertheless restored dignity to the office of the president in the wake of several weak administrations.

As part of the "American Presidents" series under the editorial direction of Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., distinguished historian Graff (America: The Glorious Republic, to 1877) offers new insight into a President who is often overlooked. Best known as the only President to serve two nonconsecutive terms, Cleveland does indeed deserve Graff's fresh examination. The 1888 Presidential election was marked by one of the earliest and most virulent attacks on the personal behavior of a candidate when Cleveland was accused of fathering a child out of wedlock. But the candidate took full responsibility for the child (an act Graff refers to as "the gold standard" for such circumstances), and in the end the incident did not cause Cleveland to lose the election. Graff's examination of the 1888 election is one of the finest short reviews of that peculiar race available. Cleveland had a narrow view of the President's powers and did not exert the more expansive leadership that would characterize later Presidents. But he was an able administrator and pursued a clean-government agenda. This slim volume is a valuable addition to the literature on the Presidency and is a compelling argument for taking Cleveland seriously as a President. For political collections of public libraries.

History professor Graff points out that whatever public remembrance exists for Grover Cleveland rests almost entirely on his unique role as the only president to serve two nonconsecutive terms in the White House. In this latest addition to the publisher's American Presidents series, the basics of Cleveland's life and career are presented with workable, even admirable, concision. Cleveland rose quickly through New York State politics, establishing himself early on as "a straight arrow." Political reform was in the air, and "Cleveland, the politician of integrity, manifestly was riding with the wind of change at his back." Notice of his honesty and integrity spread nationwide, and he was elected president in 1884. Defeated for reelection in 1888, Cleveland recovered the Oval Office in 1892, and even though his interpretation of the role of president generally fit into the late-nineteenth-century mold of rather passive leadership, he nonetheless earned the admiration of the American public during his two administrations. Solid, short biography of Grover Cleveland

If you want great detail on the presidents, this book series, "The American Presidents," will not be for you. If, however, you would like to get better introduced to some of the Presidents with some quick reads, this series could be very attractive. "Grover Cleveland," written by Henry Graff, is one book in the series. At the outset, I will say that this is a nice introduction to Grover Cleveland; if you want lots of detail, though, this book will not be for you.

That said, this is up to the usual dependable quality of works in this series. The book begins by placing the Cleveland family in context (e.g., I had never guessed that one of Cleveland's predecessors was a founder of Cleveland, Ohio, after whom the city was named!). The story of Cleveland's political career began in earnest when he served as Mayor of Buffalo, NY. This served as a launching point for his accession as Governor of New York. In the latter role, he distinguished himself as a "reformer."

After that, as a result of a confluence of events, he was nominated for President as a Democrat. While running for office (not that candidates did much in the way of campaigning), it came out that Cleveland may have fathered a child out of wedlock. Indicative of Cleveland's reputation, when asked what his "handlers" should do, he said, "Tell the truth." Rather refreshing!

Once elected, he served as a competent president, with some accomplishments in his first term. He was defeated when he ran for re-election, with Benjamin Harrison ousting him from office. However, four years later, he was re-elected to serve the White House. There were many challenges in his second term, some beyond his control. There was also the medical problem that was kept from public eye.

The book winds down by talking of his life after the presidency. This 138 page volume gives a nice glimpse of Grover Cleveland, his presidency, his times, and his accomplishments. For what it is, it does well. Recommended for those who want a brief introduction to the presidents generally and Cleveland specifically.

Integrity and Stolidity in an American President

This short book is part of "The American Presidents" series edited by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. The series devotes a short volume to the life and accomplishments of each American President. The books in the series can be read quickly, and each gives the reader an overview of the life and accomplishments of an important American figure. It is a worthy goal to encourage people to get a working understanding of our presidents and part of an attempt to reeducate Americans about their country and government. The series, Schelsinger states in his introductory note, will "give readers some understanding of the pitfalls and potentialities of the presidency and also of the responsiblities of citizenship".
Professor Graff's short study of the life of Grover Cleveland (1837-1908) fulfills the aim of the series. The book consists of a brief biography of Cleveland and covers his youth, his public (and some of his private) life before he became president, his two presidencies, and his life in retirement. The accomplishments of each of his two terms are summarized, if briefly.
As do most writers who have studied Cleveland, Professor Graff finds his strength in his integrity and common sense. He was able to persuade his fellow Americans, both before and during his presidency of his honesty. Cleveland was a President without charisma and an uninspiring public speaker. He regretted his entire life his lack of a college education, and his career shows something of a discomfort with new ideas or new approaches. Yet, he was able to turn these traits, together with his own strengths into advantages. He proved a capable and inspiring President.
Professor Graff does not engage in hero-worship. If anything, I thought that he somewhat undervalued Cleveland and his accomplishment. He describes some aspects of Cleveland's presidencies which seem to run counter to the picture of Cleveland as a reformer and as given to complete probity and openness.(For examples, Graff discusses the abrupt dismissals of many Republican civil servants at the outset of his terms and the secret operation on Cleveland's jaw which was held on a ship offshore to conceal it from the public at the beginning of Cleveland's second term.) Yet Graff finds much to admire in Cleveland in his hard work, acknolwedgement of his illegitimate child, financial probity, and Civil Service reform. Graff praises Cleveland for his refusal to support the annexation of Hawaii when its queen was overthrown under dubious circumstances. Cleveland restored public faith in government at a time when it was sorely lacking. I think he was the first President who could be desribed as attempting to govern by principles that he believed were both "conservative" and "compassionate." In this he is an inspiration whose goals, if not all his specific decisions, could be followed and expanded upon.
This is not a complete study of Grover Cleveland but it succeeds well in giving the reader a sense of his accomplishment. The reader who wants to learn more might read Allan Nevins', "Grover Cleveland, A Study in Courage" (1944) which remains the standard biography of Cleveland.
