I'll put on my boots and walk a long way to see you; I'll pedal my bicycle and zip over the hills to see you. The refrain, Here comes Grandma! appears throughout. The spunky woman and her faithful dog are depicted traveling by horse, car, train, skis, hot-air balloon, and plane, each mode seeming more adventurous than the last. When Grandma finally arrives, she delivers a great big hug to the delighted child. The simple, rhythmic text suits the mood of the story, and the vivid gouache illustrations have a warm, folklike quality. PreS-K. In this petite picture book by sisters Lord and Paschkis, a loving adult reassures a child that nothing will keep them apart, will likewise remind many of Brown's Runaway Bunny. Declarative lines ("Here comes grandma! I'm coming to see you") and vibrant, folk art-style paintings communicate the festive joy of a visit from a grandparent, portraying successive legs of a complicated journey undertaken by a determined grandmother. Paschkis' art, which can also be found in Bottle Houses: The Creative World of Grandma Prisbrey (2004), works equally well here, fusing contemporary and traditional perceptions of grandmothers through Eastern European motifs (such as grandma's babushka) that whimsically play against her anything-but-geriatric modes of transport. A lighthearted tale of particular relevance to today's families, in which baby-boomer grandparents complete triathalons as often as they doze in rocking chairs. Jennifer Mattson

A grandmother's love

Every page of this book exudes the love of a grandmother for her grandchild. On each 2-page spread, a plump, old-fashioned grandmother takes a bike, skis, car, etc. to visit the child. The pictures are amusing for an adult even after many readings (I especially like the woman in her rubber bathing cap and polka-dot swimsuit) and they are also filled with small details that keep a child's attention. The words have a wonderful pattern that is characteristic of classics. And the ending is perfect, a big bearhug when the grandmother arrives. A fantastic book!

Sweet book

I bought this book for my two-year-old to read with his grandma, but it would be a GREAT gift for a grandma to give to a child. It's a small book, not a board book but about that size, so it's easier for little hands to hold. The grandma is traditional looking, but relentless in her pursuit to get to her grandchild. It's a sweet story and my son loves to have my mother read it to him - he requests it again and again. He even has it memorized and "reads" it to her.
