“...the dramatic and immediate images and the realistic setting make this an intriguing new "Jack" for storytimes as well as a fresh offering for fairy-tale units.” ―BCCB

“Images of a huge beanstalk superimposed on a brick apartment building; stylized blackbirds flying around the giant's castle; small Jack on hands and knees with large brush in hand amidst a pile of huge dirty dishes are …memorable…” ―SLJ

Brilliant photographic effects, story so-so
By Dienne
This book immediately leaps off the shelf and captivates the eye. It is filled with eye-capturing bright, bold photographs combined and doctored to delightful effect. We see a jar of brightly-colored magical beans which become an enormous beanstalk growing right outside Jack's apartment window. We see Jack, a real live boy, climbing this stalk up past his apartment building and over the whole city. We see a castle in the clouds inhabited by a giant couple who, other than their size, could be your rather eccentric next-door neighbors. We see Jack toiling to wash oversize dishes that he could practically sleep in. And finally we see Jack's escape with the fabled golden goose.

The pictures are so entrancing you might even forget to read the story. And that might be a good thing. The story itself is rather corny and simply doesn't gel, leaving a rather sour taste after the expectations raised by the delicious pictures.

Jack apparently "earned" the beans by doing chores for his neighbor, Mrs. M, who assures him that the beans are worth more than she owes. When Jack climbs the beanstalk, he naturally finds the fabled castle and goes in, following the smell of freshly-baked cookies. Inside he finds not only the biggest man he's ever seen, but the vainest. The giant is busy telling his wife, who is giving him a pedicure, just how lucky she is to be married to him. I guess this is supposed funny, but it's not so much.

Upon discovering the boy in their midst, the giant's wife encourages her husband to "be gentle with this one. You don't know your own strength." So apparently there have been other boys, but that's all we learn about that.

The giants then show off their gold-egg laying hen (I guess it's not a goose; and it's not golden) and even let him hold an egg, but apparently only to rub his face in it. "I bet you wish you had a hen like this. Well, she's the only one and she's mine." The boy is then sent off to do the chores while the giant naps.

But the giant's wife makes the foolish mistake of leaving Jack alone for a minute. Naturally, Jack nabs the goose, er, hen and splits. Jack races down the beanstalk. The giants follow. Jack chops down the beanstalk. And we find out why Mrs. M sent him up there in the first place. Jack seems rather unperturbed to have been sent off to be a slave, but nonetheless, he's tired and hungry, so he goes home.

The pictures promise so much that the dull writing is an especially great let down. It seems that with a bit of tweaking the writing could be very funny and this could be a stand-out children's book. According to Amazon's guidelines, two stars means "I didn't' like it", and I, in fact, did not like it. However, I'm giving it an extra star for the originality in the creative use of photographic effects.

The Fantastic and imaginative world of Nina Crews
By Fran Landt
"Jack and the Beanstalk" by Nina Crews is an example of imaginative illustrations! Crews (daughter of children's author/illustrator Donald Crews) inserts photographs of children into OTHER photographed settings, creating dreamlike illustrations for classic and original stories, poems, etc. in which children find (or fantasize) themselves transported to other places, worlds, possibilities. In the preschool classroom or at home, Nina Crews' books are perfect for author/illustrator studies. My students have created their own "Nina Crews Style" illustrations, with stories to go with them! And have compared the illustrations to the very different style of her father!

It amazes me that this author/illustrator is not more well-known and celebrated! She's one of my favorites...and my list includes Maurice Sendak, and the brilliant Theodore Geissel, aka Dr. Seuss.
