Book by book, journey by journey, knot by knot, book packager King provides a geographical guide to Aubrey and Maturin's adventures. (Distinguishing between real locales and those invented by O'Brian was the worst part of the job, notes King.) Cartographer William Clipson provides maps. And maritime historian Hattendorft gives background on the patterns of winds and ocean currents--information so necessary to navigators--and informs us that, in the early 1790s, it would have taken 124 dys to sail from holland to Cape Town. An Amazing Guide to the Aubrey/Maturin Series

I just loved this companion to the Aubrey/Maturin series. I loved the quick and informative discussions of winds and currents and ships and the historical context. Nothing to do with ships and sails is familiar to me. I love the series for its human historicity and Patrick O'Brian's prose, among the most graceful ever written. While reading the first few books, I went back time and again to figure out which sails went where and lees from larboards. I take the point of some reviewers that they could have done with a few more maps and a bit more historical and technical material instead of the plot summaries, but I disagree. Because I chose not to rush through the series in a couple of months, but instead read them slowly over several years, I enjoyed going back and reading through the summaries before I began each installment. "Harbors and High Seas" added immeasurably to my enjoyment of the Aubrey/Maturin series. Bravo to Dean King for the research and the passion that he clearly has for the novels.

Jack Aubrey would use this!

There are two things wrong with O'Brien's Aubrey-Maturin books: I often can't figure out who is talking, that's one, and I cant keep track of where they are, that's two. King's book really solves the second problem and in doing so, extends the books in a way another novelist could not. King provides the missing knowledge of the seas, the world, the ports, and some history that O'Brien merely assumes. And in doing so makes it even more delicious and filling, extending the world according to O'Brien that we all love into not more novels, but more depth and relevance for the existing 20 and well worth accompanying them for that purpose.
As for problem one. Can anyone suggest a set of rules for interpreting who is doing the talking in the O'Brien books? Most of the time it is apparent, but sometimes its a struggle to reread and try to figure it out. Or is it just me ....

Synopsi of each book; info on all the islands, cities and other places visited, excellent maps. I did want a little more though... more of each type of thing. It's one of those that you would want on your shelf along with other companion books. No 1 book is perfect.
