Josh Swensen (otherwise known as Larry) can't seem to get off the couch. His usual overactive imagination and save-the-world mindset have all but vanished, and his best friend Beth is seriously worried. When Beth coaxes Josh into taking a walk at Walden Pond, Josh meets Gus Muldarian, a spiritual guru who convinces him to join his study group as a way to find deeper meaning in life. Josh thinks Gus is a joke. Still, feeling desperate and seeing no way out of his rut, he agrees to try it. What begins as a harmless Thoreau-esque search for meaning soon turns into Josh's most chaotic and profound adventure yet.

After the success of The Gospel According to Larry and Vote for Larry, Janet Tashjian returns with yet another tour de force--a book that explores important topics and will keep teens hooked right until the unexpected end.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9–11—After his "pseudocide" in The Gospel According to Larry (2001) and his failed presidential race in Vote for Larry (2004, both Holt), Josh Swenson (aka Larry) returns home to Massachusetts a lost soul. When he discovers his old girlfriend studying with a guru named Gus, he decides to sign up and search for the meaning of life with her. The resulting adventures include the F.B.I., land mines, and the possibility of finding the father he never knew. The plot includes many circumstances that are very coincidental, a timeline that is inexplicable, and loving acts that are far too altruistic, even for Larry. But throughout, Josh/Larry maintains his desire to make a difference in this world, and his drive to do something goes into first gear, especially when he thinks that Walden Pond is going to be blown up. Tashjian's pace is tightly synchronized and it is worth it to trust her. Just when readers wonder how much more disbelief they can suspend, an explanation occurs and the seemingly implausible becomes believable. The serious world problem of land mines buried in over 80 countries and killing more than 70 people a day is addressed in one of Josh/Larry's footnotes. This is, after all, based on a manuscript submitted by Josh to the author, as she explains in her prologue and epilogue. Shining throughout is the character of Josh/Larry himself, a teen who will grab readers' interest, whether or not they have read the first two titles.—Sue Lloyd, Franklin High School Library, Livonia, MI

From Booklist
Josh Swenson, aka Larry, has been busy for an 18-year-old. In The Gospel According to Larry (2001), he spearheaded an anti-consumerism campaign; then he ran for president in Vote for Larry (2004). But now Larry is bummed. What has he accomplished? (Most people would say plenty. This setup is the weakest part of the book.) Barely able to get off the couch to visit his beloved Walden Pond, he changes his attitude when he meets a guru named Gus, who might know the meaning of life—and maybe he’s Josh’s father. What follows is a madcap journey that will elicit gasps from readers as Josh is drawn more deeply into Gus’ cult. A sampling of the story’s oddities? Kidney donation, a beheaded dog, and many, many paint-by-number kits. The Larry stories have always been over the top, and that’s particularly true here. But just when you think Tashjian’s plotting has gone off the rails, she comes up with a twist so clever it rights everything that’s come before. This probably doesn’t stand alone (many of Josh’s signature footnotes refer to previous books), but fans will enjoy the reunion. Grades 8-12. --Ilene Cooper

Review
* [A] clever, inspiring sequel. (Publishers Weekly (starred review, Editor's Pick) on VOTE FOR LARRY)

Once again, Tashjian manages to take a fairly unbelievable premise and make it seem more than fairly believable. (The Horn Book on VOTE FOR LARRY)

Josh has a fresh, intelligent voice, filled with common sense, passion, and conviction . . . A solid and timely work that will make readers laugh, but more important, will make them think. (VOYA on VOTE FOR LARRY)

love the series
By Mom3
I actually read Vote for Larry first, using my usual method of arbitrarily pulling books off the shelves at the public library. That is how I stumbled upon the books by Janet Tashjian. I then bought all of the Larry books as Xmas gifts for my 15 year old niece, 13 year old godson and 13 year old daughter. Each got one and will trade after finishing. My 13 year old daughter has already finished The Gospel According to Larry and pronounced it one of her fave books. It does help to read them in order, to keep track of the characters that pop in and out. But, at the their ages, they figure it out in context. Enjoy. I wish there were more books like this for my teen daughter, most are about getting a boyfriend, keeping a boyfriend or dealing with the popular girls in school. That is not her preferred genre at all. Yes, she devoured the Twilight series but these books take them to another world as well.

Oh no!
By ReaderGirl
I really wanted to love this book because I adored the first two books about Larry, but I'm afraid this really went off in the absolute wrong direction for me. It's impossible to say too much without massive spoilers, so I apologize for being cryptic, but after the layers of meaning and relevance in the first two books, I found this plot to be superficial and in many ways just morally outrageous. I did still enjoy the writing style. I wish I could give half stars because I would give this 2 1/2 -- right in the middle, neutral, not good or bad. But I can't so I have to choose 2 stars or 3 stars, and I can't give it a rating that is more good than bad. I just wish the author had picked almost ANY other direction to go with in Larry's life, because by the end of this I don't like many of the characters anymore.

A great, yet extremely unrealistic, novel.
By Anna LaGrois
Whatever I was expecting, Larry and the Meaning of Life was definetly not what I was expecting. I haven't read the other two books in the series, but that didn't seem to matter. There were still Larry's funny footnotes if I ever got lost (which wasn't a lot). Larry's voice is really funny. There weren't many serious parts in this book, instead I was laughing most of the time.

However, the story was just really unrealistic. I cannot see this happening to anybody. Ever. That was really the only downside to this book.
