Chris Raschka--whose beautiful, brilliant tributes to jazz legends in Mysterious Thelonious and Charlie Parker Played Be Bop are not to be missed--pays tribute to another slice of American music history with this lovely celebration of a traditional Shaker hymn. "'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free, 'tis the gift to come down where we ought to be," lilts the hymn. And Raschka translates its gentle movement to the page, scripting the lyrics in what appears to be (simply) black crayon against a band of soothing color at the top or bottom of each spread. The rest of each page is awash in warm tones and heavy strokes, depicting a cat, a bird, a squirrel, and a turtle in the abstract, primitive style of Paul Klee. In explaining how he so expertly translates music to the printed page, Raschka has said that he tries to "stick to the form of the music and let the music dictate the form of the book." Indeed. With Simple Gifts, Raschka offers readers the simple yet powerful gift of experiencing music as color, movement, and graceful pages. PreSchool-Grade 3?Raschka slides easily from a visual interpretation of jazz rhythms (Charlie Parker Played Be-Bop [1992], Mysterious Thelonious [1997, both Orchard]) to the soulful strains of a Shaker hymn. He notes inspiration culled from a late painting by Paul Klee. This stylistic choice is surprising and yet perfectly suited to the text. As the pages turn, bold black lines define, in succession, a cat, blue jay, squirrel, turtle, and rabbit in motion against a background of dynamic, geometric shapes that suggest leaves and sunlight. The texture of the pastel paper shows through the oil crayon outlines and sweeps of interior color, adding energy and interest to the design. Most impressive, however, is the way Raschka choreographs the animals through the narrative. An author's note (printed above the melody) explains that the song was originally sung quite rapidly while Shaker men and women danced in circular patterns. Raschka portrays a playful, geometrically jumbled, hide-and-seek scene for the verse, "And when we find ourselves in the place just right"; then the animals are shown cuddling sweetly in a calmer close-up, "'Twill be in the valley of love and delight." He builds a joyous finale of flora and fauna swirling over several pages?"To turn, turn will be our delight." The hand-lettered, black cursive text against a band of gold or tan provides a fluid, childlike accompaniment that matches the mood and palette of the images to a tee. Wonderful illustrations to this beautiful hymn helps the reader savor the song

What a gorgeously illustrated book of the Shaker hymn. Putting illustrations to each phrase allowed us (kids and adults alike) to savor each bit of this song. I love the history of the hymn and the sheet music to it at the end of the book. This is on my short list for gifts for children who love music and for music teachers.

My son participated in an enrichment class at his school focusing on Klee: his time, his works, his influence. Mrs. Greening, his teacher in this program, shared this book with me one day when I went in to observe! It is an absolutely beautful book inspired by Klee and the Shaker hymn. I am really looking forward to holding it in my hands, and keeping it near me, in order to view it again and again.
