Susan Berman’s wood-shingled cottage seems distinctly out of place at the edge of Beverly Hills. In Berman’s living room, a Liberace ashtray, shaped like a piano, holds a few crumpled butts. On the wall are pictures of Berman’s parents: her mother tap-dancing, one of her father’s wanted posters, which reads “Reward $8000.” Another wall features a photo of Susan in a party dress posing with Jimmy Durante. Her refrigerator contains only a carton of milk, a half-stick of
butter, a jug of cranberry juice cocktail and a package of cheddar cheese.

In the spare bedroom where Berman was killed, faint winter light bleeds through the window and illuminates a few brownish-red commas of blood. Berman was found in a white T-shirt and purple sweatpants. Barefoot. A single bullet casing was discovered next to her body. She was shot once in the back of the head.

Fascinating and gripping

Miles Corwin writes beautifully and does a great job in engaging the reader not just with the detectives, but with the victims, the families of the victims, and even with the suspects, as in the end i couldn't help but feel sorry for some of them. A great insight into real police work that doesn't always end with nailing a case. I also enjoyed learning that these detectives have a great sense of humor as a way to exorcise the grime of their job.

Amazing journalism

I have always been a true-crime fan and this book sets the bar incredibly high. Not only is the author a masterful writer that truly puts you as close to the action as anyone can on paper, but his style is engrossing and makes this book impossible to put down. The cases are fascinating, and his access to this elite squad of detectives is virtually unheard of. This is truly a book you wont forget anytime soon.

I totally loved this book. Could not put it down. Way better than 99% of the fictional crime solving you see in television and film. I love his descriptions of the officers, the city, the "inside" look.
He is a fine writer. I plan to locate his other books and devour them, too.

The story of the Ottoman Empire's slaughter of one million Armenians in 1915—a genocide still officially denied by the 83-year-old modern Turkish state—has been dominated by two historiographical traditions. One pictures an embattled empire, increasingly truncated by rapacious Western powers and internal nationalist movements. The other details the attempted eradication of an entire people, amid persecutions of other minorities. Part of historian Akçam's task in this clear, well-researched work is to reconcile these mutually exclusive narratives. He roots his history in an unsparing analysis of Turkish responsibility for one of the most notorious atrocities of a singularly violent century, in internal and international rivalries, and an exclusionary system of religious (Muslim) and ethnic (Turkish) superiority. With novel use of key Ottoman, European and American sources, he reveals that the mass killing of Armenians was no byproduct of WWI, as long claimed in Turkey, but a deliberate, centralized program of state-sponsored extermination. Akcam has attracted considerable attention for being one of the first Turkish intellectuals to devote his career to studying the systematic slaughter of one million Armenians during World War I. For this reason, he has been harshly criticized by those who would deny the existence of an Armenian genocide. Akcam's earlier work, From Empire to Republic (2004), contextualized the genocide within a climate of Turkish nationalism and attempted to provide the basis for a Turkish national conversation about trauma and culpability. Although essentially similar to that book in its analysis of Turkish culpability, his latest study is considerably broader in historical scope. He seeks to harmonize the conventional narrative of the collapsing Ottoman Empire with victims' perspectives of Turkish dominance over minorities. He does this by showing a state--rent by internal power struggles and terrified of being partitioned--that pursues genocide as a way of avoiding catastrophic collapse. Clearly a companion to Peter Balakian's Burning Tigris (2003) and other accounts of the genocide, this book also deserves to be read in concert with recent works analyzing the politics of genocide and national shame in Germany. The Armenian Genocide told by a brave Turkish historian

Finally a brave and matter-of-fact account of the history of WW1 Ottoman Turkey and the evil Tehcir Law which led to the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1916 and the extetmination and forced deportation of Ottoman Armenians from Turkey. İndeed Dr. Akçam makes no excuses or rebuttals for justifying the massacres and ateocities but rather in full honesty retells the true history of the Armenian massacres of WW1 on the lands of Ottoman Turkey based on his own research and to-date unrevealed Ottoman historic archives and documents from the 1913-1921 period. This is a must-read for all Ottoman historians, particularly for liars and deniers of truth such as Justin McCarthy and Stanford Shaw's bastards that are alive today.

Large figures on the page make this a good choice for storytimes as well as lap times. Like Michael Rosen's We're Going on a Bear Hunt (McElderry, 1989), this lovely picture book will delight preschoolers.

Every library at school and home should have this book

Love, love, love this book! I tell the story every summer at my pre-school summer music camps. I use different instruments for the sound of the long grass, swamp, lake, and cave; plus a small glockenspiel can help children understand the concept of "going over" and "going under." Beautifully written and beautifully illustrated!

I just used this book today at work with preschoolers. After reading it, the kids had a great time acting out the story with props that I either made or brought from home. In addition to the lion, there are other animals that they can try to spy on the pages. Lots of language was generated!

Keep on truckin'.

In his 1975 Introduction to his book Dandelion Wine Ray Bradbury has this to say about children and the ugliness of the mechanical world. "Trains and boxcars and the smell of coal and fire are not ugly to children. Ugliness is a concept that we happen on later and become self-conscious about." It's true that many of us adults forget how fascinating and beautiful large machines are to small humans. Of course there are a few grownups capable of remembering, and if they are authors they might write books about trucks and trains and cars and planes. Yet these books tend to be written for small tykes and too often they are simplistic and sufficient. In my own experience as a children's librarian I have noticed that what kids really love in such books are details and realism. They like to be told the difference between a stabilizer and a backhoe bucket or a tow cable and a smoke stack. William Low taps into that need, bringing us a book that combines story, technical details, and sheer beauty all in one neat little package. At last children and adults finally can find a middle ground in what they consider "beautiful".

You want a lift the flap book? Brother, you got it. In Machines Go To Work a riverside town plays host to a wide variety of different mechanical beasts. In the first scene we see a backhoe suspiciously close to some tulips. The text asks, "Is the backhoe digging up the flowers?" Lift the flap and the answer is revealed. "No, it's digging a hole for new crab-apple trees. The flowers are safe." The book continues in this manner. Firemen rescue a kitten from a tree, a news helicopter reports on a family of ducks crossing the road, a cement mixer needs a tow, and so on. At the end of the day a huge freight train moves through the town and as we lift the flaps the scene pulls back so that we're looking down on the town from above. And in the midst of the clicketys and the clacks we can see the tow truck, ship, helicopter, fire truck and backhoe all scattered about the streets, going about their day.

William Low is an author/illustrator who is quite popular here in New York. His books Chinatown and Old Penn Station speak to his familiarity with the city itself. Machines Go To Work is an entirely different beast altogether then. It's a tale of a small town with an industrial history (or so the cargo ship and the train would have me believe). As such, Low is free to indulge in the natural beauty of the living world coupled alongside the mechanical beauty of vehicles. This may not be clear from the cover, but open the book up and look at the title page. There you see a fire truck, and behind it a view of trees and houses. And behind that? The sea. It's a bright sunny day, but the truck is driving through shadow in this shot, which allows its lights the chance to shine a little in the semi-darkness. And when I think of all the truck books out there that just throw a vehicle into a scene without considering lighting, mood, shadow, or landscape, I grow increasingly impressed with Mr. Low's work.

I began this review by saying that this book finds a middle ground between what kids find beautiful and what adults acknowledge as lovely. In no spread is this clearer than when the firefighters rescue a kitten from a small grove of cherry blossom trees. This selection is near the beginning of the book, which I credit to Low's cleverness. A parent flipping through the book idly might pause and grant the book greater respect if they saw this spread right at the start of the story. Essentially what we see here is a fire truck (the front in a kind of permanent shadow, which is a bit odd but oh well) parked before a riot of pink and white blossoms. The blue sky is only slightly visible in the midst of all this color, and the fact that the brick red fire truck doesn't clash is impressive. One could stare at this picture for a very long time, entirely separate from the story. If William Low does anything, he makes it so that when children ask for this book to be read over and over again, the parents will be eager to plunge themselves into this gorgeous world once more.

What we adults find mundane, Low turns into a story. Adults would generally find a tale of how a tow truck got a jump from a pickup truck less then entirely thrilling. Some kids, however, would want to know the logistics of this moment in the minutest details. Kids are like that. When they want to learn about something they won't stop until they've sated their own curiosity. Low provides for this. In the back of the book is a two-page spread that shows small incredibly well articulated and detailed machines as seen in the book. Each machine (even the railroad crossing sign, which I liked) has a description as well as arrows and words describing each part. Kids will see where a tow truck's towline is or a tugboat's spotlight. Adults could probably use a refresher for this kind of stuff as well.

When I think of William Low's art, I tend to think of thick paints, visible strokes, and bright clear-cut colors. In Machines Go To Work, Low still has all of that, but he has worked in a delicacy and detailing that catch the eye as well. Taking into account his attention to light and shadow, his sense of small towns and their appearances, and the simultaneous beauty found in mechanics and nature, I think it's clear that this is more than your average truck title. This picture book is beautiful and will be loved by young and old alike. Even if you've never cared two bits about things that go vroom and honk honk, you're going to like what you find here. A rote subject by a master of the form.

This is a fantastic book for the young inquisitive child who is wild about machines and how they work!

The backhoe looks like it's about ready to go to work because the stabilizers have been lowered so it won't fall on its side. "GZZZZZZZZZK!" Looks like it's going to dig up some flowers, but wait . . . "it's digging a hole for new crab-apple trees." Whew, the tulips will be just fine. Hey, there goes a fire truck. "WWAAAAAWWWWWWWWRRRR!" It's stopped next to a row of cherry blossom trees. Not a very likely spot for a fire, but wait . . . it looks like they are going to rescue a little white kitten in the tree tops.

There are a lot of working vehicles and perhaps you know someone who drives or flies one. The drum on the cement mixer keeps "turning to prevent the concrete from becoming hard." In this book you can see and read about one and you'll learn about many of its parts. Can you point out where the water tank is? You'll also be able to see many other machines at work. There is a tow truck, a helicopter, a diesel locomotive (you'll learn about the railroad crossing sign too), a tug boat and a container ship. "HONK! HONK!" Watch out. The tug boat is going to help the container ship!

This is a fantastic book for the young inquisitive child who is wild about machines and how they work. The art work is very colorful and the three and four-page spreads totally engage the reader. For example a two-page spread shows a fire truck coming. On the next page the question is asked, "is there a fire in the cherry blossom trees?" The question is answered when the right-hand page opens up and the entire truck is revealed and you see the ladder extension and the fireman cuddling the kitten to his chest. Each machine has similar flaps to explore. In the back of the book is a two-page spread with technical information on each vehicle. Those little hands are going to be busy turning the flaps on this marvelous book!

hard at work

Machines are hard at work for us each day making our work a little easier. This picture book shows us many machines and tells us about the jobs that they do. The book is unique in that in features flaps to lift that make the two page spread turn into a four page spread. Children will enjoy this interactive feature.

Excellent fantasy book for children and adults alike!

The story is about Dina, a young girl coming of age, who has inherited her mothers gift - the shamer's eyes. When people look into the eyes of a person with this gift, they are confronted with the things they have done in their lives, and the kind of person they really are.
Most people find this experience very unpleasant or at least unsettling, but some people can look a shamer in the eye - without being affected by it.
Those are people who are very balanced with who they are; Because they are *good*, and therefore has very little to be ashamed about, or because they are so evil or selfish - they don't have any shame in them... But how do you know whether they're the one kind or the other? How do you know when you're only 10 years old?
When her mother is taken captive, Dina is forced to experience and understand the world on her own. Who can you trust? How do you know which choices to make? Dina finds herself caught in the middle of a political intrigue for the throne. The Lord Drakan wants to use her powers for his own ends - and Dina has to find out what's going on, defend herself against witch-charges, AND find a way of freeing her mother.
This is an excellent fantasy book. It's really well written, and the author masterfully ends each chapter with a cliffhanger that makes you go "What happens next???"
The story is about trust, friendship, courage and choice. It's amusing, full of suspense, and it gives children and adults alike lots of food for thought!
This book is a must-have for every child aged 9-13, and every adult who enjoyed reading Harry Potter!
It's the first in a series of four. (the last one will be published in Denmark this fall).

Fantastic books! - Review of all 4 books (by a danish girl)

The first book about Dina is a succes BUT

- It gets so much better! There are four books about the shamers children and you HAVE to read all of them!

In the second book we'll hear about Dina's brother Davin (or that's what he is called in the original version) and Dina's fight for justice for themselves and their new friend Nico.

The first book is fantastic and you have to read it to understand the second, the thierd and ofcourse the last one!

solid series starter, recommended for the better sequel

The Shamer's Daughter is in itself a pleasant little story that moves along well and has at its core an extremely intriguing concept that here is unfortunately not fully explored, but the good news is that while Shamer's Daughter is an ok read, its sequel, Shamer's Signet, is a much stronger book, well-rewarding the reader who begins the series.

"Shamers" have the gift of, as one might guess, shaming. To look into a Shamer's eyes is to look into a mirror of your soul, revealing all that you have to feel guilty about. It's no surprise, therefore, that few people look into a Shamer's eyes unless compelled by law (Shamer's are used to confirm guilt or innocence in the social system). Dina's mother is an experienced Shamer called upon by those around her for matters of dispute, feared but respected. Ten-year-old Dina has inherited her mother's gift and for her it is a cause of isolation since none of her like-aged peers want anything to do with her (imagine the shameful things you did as a child).

When Dina's mother is kidnapped by Lord Drakan (the name alone would have clued her into his evil intent you'd think, not to mention the not-so-tame dragons he keeps below his castle), Dina must rise to the challenge of saving her mother, solving a royal murder, preventing the execution of an innocent man, and escaping herself from Drakan's clutches.

As mentioned, the story moves along relatively well. It's a quick read for the most part, with a few places that lag and a few too-contrived scenes. If Dina acts well past her age, it's a flaw easily overlooked. The biggest disappointment is how little is done with the potentially powerful idea of Shaming--Kaaberbol skirts around the edges but never really fully explores the idea's potential drama, leaving the story feeling a bit flat. It isn't dull, but it doesn't have much spark to it--the kind of book you'll finish but wouldn't strongly recommend. I'm glad, however, to have waited to review it until the reading the second one, as Shamer's Signet is much stronger in story and character. So while I'd give only a tepid recommendation to Shamer's Daughter as a stand-alone book, as an introduction into a series (the third book is out but not yet in the U.S.) I recommend it much more enthusiastically. Read Daughter and enjoy it, but move on quickly to Shamer's Signet for a more rewarding read. Recommended, though more as a stepping stone into the better sequel.

People's History of the United States. Excellent case for bringing the troops home now

This outstanding book makes the case for the immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops from Iraq. This would meet the democratic demands of the Iraqi people, and also of the American and British peoples. In a September 2005 New York Times-CBS News poll, 52% supported the immediate withdrawal of US troops.

Arnove sums up, "Every single argument the Bush administration made to justify the invasion of Iraq has turned out to be false. Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction, posed no imminent threat to the United States, and had no connection to al-Qaeda or to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Iraq was attacked not because it had weapons of mass destruction, but because it did not (a fact that has not been lost on other potential targets of U. S. intervention). U. S. soldiers were not greeted as liberators, and the occupation has not paid for itself, or required few troops, or been quickly concluded. Nor has the occupation made the world safer or reduced the threat of weapons of mass destruction. Indeed, it has made Iraq, the Middle East, and the world far more dangerous."

From the start, the war on Iraq was a huge lie. As Arnove writes, "The attacks of September 11, 2001, provided the pretext the Bush administration needed to portray an offensive war to reshape the Middle East as a defensive measure to protect the people of the United States."

Everything we are told about the war is untrue. For example, we are told that the occupation troops conduct a humanitarian war on the ground. In reality, the USA is waging war largely by massive, unreported, bombing: the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing alone dropped more than 500,000 tons of bombs on Iraq between May 2003 and December 2005. We are told that there is no national resistance attacking the foreign occupier, just terrorists attacking civilians. In reality, for every attack against civilians, there are a hundred against the occupying forces.

British governments have always lied to us about matters of war and peace, of security and the national interest. This Labour government is different only because its lies have been more stupid, so that we have rumbled it more quickly.

Articulate, politically-sophisticated

Q: How many pages does it take to make a compelling case for immediate withdrawal from Iraq? A: Apparently not many when you have logic on your side!

It is a myth that Bush & Co.--though misguided--had the best of intentions at heart when they ordered the military invasion of Iraq in March of 2003. And this unfortunate myth prostrates the antiwar movement when it deludes itself into believing that a bloody occupation stemming from an illegal war can somehow be salvaged into something beneficial for anybody besides Halliburton.

Anthony Arnove's book explains the real roots of the Iraq war in the context of power and profit (not misguided humanitarianism), summarizes for the reader three years of blood-spattered occupation history, provides eight excellent reasons for immediate withdrawal and then discusses the ABC's of anti-imperialist struggle drawn from the history of the Vietnam War.

This isn't a catchall antiwar book to give to your chicken hawk uncle at the next family reunion. This is a book for the 50 million Americans who already consider themselves part of the antiwar movement and want some real answers about stopping the blood-letting. Or as the author puts it, "...the U.S. left in particular needs far greater clarity about the reasons for the war, the political context of the war, and an effective strategy for ending it." (page 98)

This is the most articulate, politically sophisticated yet easy-to-read appeal to bring our loved ones home now that I've read since the war began.

"We find ourselves in a remarkable situation today," argues Anthony Arnove in _Iraq: The Logic of Withdrawal._

"Despite a massive propaganda campaign in support of the occupation of Iraq, a clear majority of people in the United States now believes the invasion was not worth the consequences and should never have been undertaken...

Yet many people who opposed this unjust invasion, who opposed the 1991 Gulf War and the sanctions on Iraq for years before that, some of whom joined mass demonstrations against the war before it began, have been persuaded that the U.S. military should now remain in Iraq for the benefit of the Iraqi people. We confront the strange situation today of many people mobilizing against an unjust war but then reluctantly supporting the military occupation that flows directly from it." (65-66)

Arnove's very readable book is aimed at resolving this paradox by providing a clear case for the immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops from Iraq. He poses the question -- in contrast to widespread fears of what might happen if the U.S. leaves Iraq -- of what happen if it stays.

The first five chapters lay the groundwork for the book's main argument in favor of immediate withdrawal. The first two chapters compare the claims made by politicians and pundits to the reality of the war's deadly consequences. These chapters comprise an exhaustive compendium of the most damning facts, quotes and stories about how the war was sold and the devastation it has wrought. By exposing the occupation from every angle -- from the unwillingness of the mainstream media to question the lies coming from the mouths of the government; to the corporate profiteering and sheer corruption of the neoliberal regime being imposed upon Iraq; to, most of all, the inhumanity and brutality of the U.S. as an occupying power -- they are an invaluable resource for activists.

The next three chapters place this occupation in its historical context, showing how it fits into a history of U.S. colonialism on the one hand, and a history of Iraqi occupation -- and resistance -- on the other. Because of how little this history is discussed in U.S. society, much of it will be new to many committed antiwar activists.

Having thus set the stage, Arnove attempts to lay out a solution in the last two chapters of his book. Chapter six puts forward eight arguments for immediate withdrawal from Iraq. Most of these arguments are framed as direct refutations of the common arguments to stay-for example, "The United States is not preventing civil war in Iraq," or "The United States is not honoring those who died by continuing the conflict." Taken together, they are utterly compelling.

Finally, chapter seven raises the question of how this vision can become a reality. It considers the factors that forced the U.S. to abandon its war in Vietnam and argues that all are beginning to be in play today, though they are not yet sufficient to outweigh the importance of occupying Iraq to a U.S. political elite determined to expand its imperial ambitions throughout the world. The heart of this chapter is its examination of the movements to end the occupation -- among students, soldiers and their families, unions, and Iraqis themselves -- and its analysis of what it will take for these movements to once again develop the power to defeat the mightiest superpower in world history.

As an antiwar activist, I feel that I've been waiting a long time for a book like this, and yet it could hardly be more timely. _Iraq: The Logic of Withdrawal_ is a crucial contribution toward clarifying why immediate withdrawal can be the only solution in Iraq -- and why an antiwar movement that takes this as its central demand is the only hope of achieving it.

Getz shows how our knowledge of Mars has changed over time, relates the findings of the Viking landers, considers what scientists think is necessary for life, and discusses how Mars might be terraformed into a planet hospitable for human life. In a penetrating second-person, you-are-there narration, he parades an amusing array of falsehoods and hysteria perpetrated in the name of Earth's neighbor, such as astronomer Percival Lowell's assumption in 1894 that the lines he saw on Mars's surface were canals, or the 1938 radio broadcast of H.G. Wells's War of the Worlds. But it is Getz's deft juggling of scientific facts that is truly engaging. Although the Martian soil is nearly antiseptic and incapable of supporting even the tiniest amino acids, the planet will, at the hands of scientists, get an environmental face lift via terraforming. During the journey to Mars, only vigorous exercise will offset the weakening of muscles and subsequent loss of bone strength in zero gravity; the crew will sleep ``standing up,'' and use a toilet with a seat belt. The numerous black-and-white satellite photos and computer- generated landscapes bring the alien terrain up close and personal; McCarty's charcoal drawings lend a sense of excitement to this lighthearted interstellar adventure. A stunning outline of the contemporary educational landscape, Sperber's book provides a stark analysis of academia's abandonment of its undergraduate students. Alluding to the ancient Roman practice of placating people with cheap bread and ostentatious spectacles, Sperber argues that an ever-growing number of state universities lure undergraduates to their schools with halcyon images of booze-filled parties and prominent sports programs while abandoning their commitment to the students' education. Administrators use the students' sorely needed tuition dollars to fund sports, build research facilities and hire world-class faculty members, who give the school prestige but scarcely give their legions of undergraduate charges the time of day. With an eye fastened on the dangerous phenomenon of binge drinking, Sperber (College Sports Inc.) backs his assertions with responses to a questionnaire he circulated to students across the country, interviews with professors and administrators and frequent citations from sociological studies. Sperber methodically attempts to persuade readers that at the largest universities, where the majority of young Americans attain their undergraduate degrees, "the party scene connected to big-time sports events replaces meaningful undergraduate education." Though he admits his work deals mainly with anecdotal rather than scientific proof, the wealth of evidence Sperber amasses to support his convictions makes for a striking, sobering read. (Sept.)

Sperber, an English professor at Indiana University and a longtime critic of major college-sports, offers a carefully researched examination of the substandard education received by undergraduates at many large universities. Although the book's subtitle suggests that the focus is on the deleterious effect of college athletics on educational quality, much of Sperber's attack is directed at more general failings: the pressure on tenured staff to do research; the lack of contact between professors and undergrads; the reliance on teaching assistants and part-time staff. In fact, the weakest part of the book is Sperber's attempt to establish a direct relationship between the presence of big-time athletics on campus and the poor education received by most undergraduates. The reader finishes the book convinced that athletics harms athletes, but that university education is in plenty of trouble with or without sports on campus. Undergraduate Education Comes Up Way Short Next to Sports

There is not much doubt that undergraduate education for the typical student at large universities is most unsatisfactory: one is, with few exceptions, a nonentity with no opportunity to shape the educational experience. The only option is to follow the rules; then it is swim or sink. Furthermore, there is no doubt that forming farm teams for professional leagues with substandard students has no place in a university.
The author shows through his survey data that major sports teams in Division 1-A of the NCAA give a focal point to the incessant partying that occurs at most major, large universities. It is the essential point of the book that college administrators are more than willing to give undergraduates "beer and the circus" of big-time sports in lieu of drastically overhauling undergraduate programs. The need for tuition dollars leads large colleges to pack freshman courses, virtually precluding a chance to learn. Sports and partying is the cynical substitute.
Clearly, the prestige focus of top college officials precludes quality education for most students. It is all about image and reputations. Good sports teams increase recognition. So do adding prestigious faculty, engaging in research for corporate America, and having special, honors education for a select minority of undergraduates. The author makes abundantly clear that well-known faculty and elaborate research do not benefit the typical student. Furthermore, athletic programs are invariably a drain on the finances of the university. Even with Fat TV contracts, athletic programs are net losers.
The author breaks down the main student subcultures into "collegiate, vocational, rebel, and academic." They have different goals and different problems interacting with the substandard educational regime. The fact that the party element, the collegiate group, is content, or resigned to, with the current educational situation hardly justifies the de-emphasis on education.
The author does briefly touch on the purposes of college education. Is college mostly a social experience; is it to obtain job skills; or is it to be liberally educated. And do colleges actually support all of those goals for all students.
There is much wrong with universities and the author makes some effort to shed light on the problems. But much more can be said. Should universities perform a special social role, or are they simply big corporations looking out for the bottom line, cutting costs where they can, while paying lip service to a grand mission? It is clear that universities will not perform that mission with the distorting impact of big time sports.

What are you getting out of your education?

This is the perfect book to analyze the effects of college sports on institutions of higher learning but also much more. This books starts by classifying students into four basic groups and describes what are the motivations of each group as it relates to a college education. I found this to be a very elementary but appropriate evaluation which clarifies why some things are as they are. The author also had sent out surveys, although not scientifically done, from which to draw conclusions. It nevertheless, was insightful concerning students feelings about athletics and their education.
The surprise for me in this book was the historical analysis of college enrollment and marketing to prespective students in the last thirty years. Included in this, the author was very critical of the "learning environment" and teachers who want to research but not teach. This was a subject which I had not seen so effectively addressed.
Yes, Murray Sperber is critical of college athletics. But I think his presentation was as balanced as possible with this bias and spared no one in his recommendations for improvement.
Without giving away the ending, his conclusion is titled, "What should happen vs. what probably will happen." The author has given his subject great thought and presented the reader with good evidence. But I think the author realizes he is tilting at windmills and the ultimate conclusion which may come within 10 years will be painful. Particularly for a dedicated educator.

Eye Opening

As an Englishman living in the United States, I can never get enthusiastic about college sports. I have no alleigance to a US college, so why bother? This book is an eye opener and no mistake. The author says, if your are not in the "Honors Program", then by and large you are going to receive a pretty mediocre undergraduate education if your University is a big time NCAA school. Students don't get a good education, but the university needs their tuition dollars, so it distracts them with the "Beer and Circus" mentality of big time sports. Not only is this a shame, it is a disgrace. He backs up his arguments too with many quotes and references. I was particularly interested in the role he gives to ESPN in this.
