Convinced that drug therapies based on dopamine replacement would never fully relieve the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, Dr. Curt Freed instead cut to the core of the matter--quite literally--and explored ways to replace damaged neurological systems caused by the disease. Healing the Brain meticulously chronicles his development and testing of a controversial surgical method, in which microscopic "noodles" of fetal brain tissue were implanted in the brains of suffering patients.
Fueled by major funding from the National Institutes of Health, Freed conducted the first double-blind fetal cell transplant study--a project involving 40 patients and spanning an unexpected five years (1994-1999). He hoped to show that such transplants would help the brain heal by repairing critical pathways that appear damaged in Parkinson's patients.
To some degree, he succeeded. Throughout this vivid account, Freed and coauthor Simon LeVay carefully outline the history of Parkinson's, treatment successes and failures, and all the players (patients, politicians, and fellow researchers) in Freed's fight against this progressively degenerative disease. While most of the text reads easily, the surgical accounts will challenge queasy stomachs; every action and reaction (by patient, doctor, and equipment) is recorded here. Freed, director of the neuroscience and neurotransplant programs at the University of Colorado, organized some of the earliest American fetal tissue transplant experiments on Parkinson's Disease patients in 1995. Here, he collaborates with science writer LeVay (The Sexual Brain) to recount his controversial double-blind studies. Freed gives a brief background on the biology of the disease and the history of Parkinson's treatments, but most of the book is devoted to his own surgical experiment, which involved 40 volunteer Parkinson's patients, half of whom received transplanted cells while the other group underwent sham surgeries. Freed describes the surgical procedures in detail, following particular patients through their operations and convalescence. The results of the study were mixed some patients showed vast improvement while others showed little and Freed speculates about why this was and what it means for future treatments and research. He also describes the various political roadblocks his team encountered, beginning with the Reagan administration's first moratorium on federal funding for fetal tissue research in 1987. Indeed, for some readers Freed's use of fetal cells, as well as his reliance on double-blind studies, may raise ethical questions. Nonetheless, the book is a lucid and engrossing medical detective story that will especially interest those whose lives have been affected by the disease. The medical details may stymie some readers, though Freed goes far in making these accessible to those without a science background.

A pioneer in fetal-tissue graft surgery for Parkinson's disease and director of the National Parkinson's Foundation Center for Excellence, Freed documents the disorder's history and treatments. He discusses his initial involvement with neurology and later specialization in Parkinson's studies and details the discovery that the loss of the chemical dopamine in the brain causes Parkinson's incapacitating symptoms. His implementation of a procedure in 1994, in which monkeys with a Parkinson's-like disease had dopamine cells from embryos transplanted into their brains, showed great promise for humans. The parallel studies of other scientists are also highlighted. Freed details outcomes from the human clinical trials of the procedure, as well as the ethical and legal issues involved in fetal-tissue research. The trials of Parkinson's patients and their involvement in the study are movingly told. While Freed's bias toward the use of fetal tissue is obvious, Parkinson's patients and others interested in the issue will find this an absorbing account. Janet M. Schneider, James A. Back in 2001 President Bush restricted federal funding for embryonic stem cell research to an existing number of cell lines already established around the world. It was later discovered that many of these cell lines could be contaminated with mouse viruses, and others were limited in their usefulness for a variety of reasons. Does this scenario sound familiar? No! Well, it should.
In the late 1980's to early 90's America was enveloped in a similar controversial scientific frontier. Then President Bush Sr. had placed a permanent moratorium on federal funding of fetal tissue research, followed by restricting it to the use of those fetuses produced by spontaneous abortion. Scientists found that these fetuses exhibited many chromosomal abnormalities and thus, were limited in their usefulness just as the approved embryonic stem cell lines are today.
Caught in the middle of the fetal research debates of that time were scientists keen on transplanting such tissue in medically compromised patients as many years of animal research had proven well worth the effort. One such scientist was neuroscientist Curt Freed, whose attempt in alleviating the hardships experienced by Parkinson's patients through the transplantation of fetal tissue raised him to the level of a hero to many patients, but reduced him to a semi-criminal to political lobbyists; an award seeker to competing scientists; and a murderer to pro-life advocates.
In Healing the Brain: A Doctor's Controversial Quest for a Cure for Parkinson's Disease, Dr. Freed and co-author neuroscientist Simon Levay tell the story of a decade old controversial study by which only half of a number men and women suffering from Parkinson's disease were to have fetal tissue transplanted into their brain. The other group of patients undergo a sham operation. Unaware of the randomized decision of the scientists as to who receives the transplant, all patients must agonizingly wait at least one year before finding out the truth.
Healing the Brain is a lot more than just the story of a single study. The history of Parkinson's disease, the pioneering scientists, the historically colorful patients, the secret scientific research, and the behind-the-scenes mongering of the political drama are all beautifully told. If the truth surrounding today's stem cell research debate needs to be known, then Healing the Brain must be read.

I worked for Dr Freed from 1994 to 2000 as a postdoc in his research team and read this book for the 1st time in 2013. It was nice to revisit the area of Parkinson's disease after leaving the field so long ago. The book was well written and would be an easy read for anyone regardless of their level of medical education. When I joined his team in 1994 all the team members expected this technique would be adopted by several medical centers throughout the US. Obviously that didn't happen but I would agree with Dr Freed that the clinical trial was well worth conducting.

A Very Important Book

I have a family member who has Parkinsons Disease so I found this very interesting and timely. Often science writing seems written only for scientists but I found this very accessible and I got the sense that the information presented is right up to date and its speculations are ahead of their time! Important book!
